Pleading For Pleats!

The Pleated Prince and his Design Process

“I believe there is Hope in Design.
Design evokes Surprise and Joy in people.

Issey Miyake”

Issey Miyake’s interest in design began when he encountered two bridges in his hometown of Hiroshima, both designed by Isamu Noguchi. The bridges were initially named Ikiru (“to live”) and Shinu (“to die”) in 1952, but were later renamed Tsukuru (“to build”) and Yuku (“to depart”). This experience made him realize that the essence of design is in enabling people to not only appreciate the bridges, but also to use them. Miyake’s designs and techniques are created to endure for future generations.

Issey Miyake’s approach to manufacturing has always been rooted in research and experimentation, encouraging his staff to think outside the box and not be bound by conventional frameworks. He has fostered new ideas by challenging them to think beyond trends and consider the current needs of society

Today, Issey Miyake’s work is loved by all who have a fearless approach to life – who are inspired by Miyake’s original ethos of experimentation and design. Pieces like the  Chiffon Twist 1 top have been repeated season after season, giving it a timeless and trendless lifestyle.
