Daub

Daub was founded by Albina Pierucci and Mattia Cavazzino and first presented in Paris in 2018. The proposition, in the founders’ own framing, is neo-minimalism: the argument that the avant-garde is reached by subtraction rather than excess. The clothes are made in Italy with Italian mills and Italian makers, cut for men and for women, and they are quiet in a way that takes a moment to register as deliberate.

Daub at W Department

What holds the collection together at W Department is fibre. Nearly everything we stock is bast or plant-derived. Three pieces are 100 percent ramie, which is the oldest of the fibre crops and the one that dries fastest and holds a crease like paper: the Hidden Buttons Shirt, the Long Shirt in white, and the Long Shirt Dress in black. The Egg-Shaped Long Patchwork T-Shirt is linen. The Short Redingote is 63 percent hemp with cupro. The Raw Edge Slip Dress and the Wrap Pants share a cupro and modal blend that moves the opposite way, wet and fluid where the ramie is dry. The Drop-Crotch Salopette is silk and cotton with a linen natural, and the Wrapped Shirt is cotton with 31 percent silk.

The reason to look at this line in Santa Fe is climate. Ramie, hemp, and linen were made for dry heat. They start stiff, they soften only through wearing, and they behave better at seven thousand feet in July than any synthetic will. That is also the Daub argument in miniature: a garment that improves through use rather than arriving finished, which is the only definition of longevity that means anything.
