Caring for What You Own: A Guide to Fabric and Garment Care

Buying well and caring well are the same decision made twice. A garment chosen for longevity only becomes long-lived if it is looked after, and most of what shortens the life of good clothing is not wear. It is cleaning. Too much of it, too hot, too often, and with the wrong thing.

The clothes we carry come from mills and workrooms that take a long view. Japanese selvedge denim, Italian wool and cashmere, Portuguese cotton, and Peruvian alpaca all reward the same habits: clean less, clean gently, dry slowly, and store thoughtfully. What follows is the general guidance we give in the store, organized by fibre, with the one mistake that most often ruins each.

The label wins

Read this first, and read it as the governing rule of everything below.

The care label sewn into your garment outranks anything on this page. We have written this guide to cover the cloth in the store as a whole, and your specific piece may be constructed, dyed, finished, or lined in a way that changes the answer. A wool jacket with a fused interlining behaves differently from an unlined wool shirt. A silk that has been piece-dyed behaves differently from one that has been printed. Where the label and this page disagree, follow the label.

Where the label is missing, illegible, or in a language you cannot read, the honest answer is to be conservative: cool water, gentle handling, air drying, or a professional you trust. Or ask us. We can usually tell you what the maker intended.

Before you clean anything

Most garments are cleaned before they need to be. Three habits will do more for the life of your wardrobe than any technique below.

Air it. A jacket, a sweater, or a pair of trousers hung overnight in moving air will shed most of a day’s odour on its own. Wool in particular is naturally odour resistant and needs washing far less often than people assume.

Brush and rest it. A soft garment brush lifts surface dust before it works into the weave. Tailoring, knitwear, and heavier cottons all benefit from a day off between wears so the fibres can recover their shape.

Treat the spot, not the garment. A small mark handled promptly with cool water and patience is a spot. The same mark run through a full cleaning cycle three weeks later is often permanent. Blot, never rub, and work from the outside of the mark inward. If it is oil, grease, ink, or anything you cannot identify, stop and take it to a cleaner, and tell them what it was. Heat sets stains, so never press or iron over one.

When to dry clean, and when not to

Dry cleaning is cleaning in solvent rather than water. It is excellent at oil-based soil and gentle on structure, which is why tailoring and most silk go that route. It is comparatively poor at water-based soil, which is why a garment can come back from the cleaner looking pressed and still carrying perspiration salts in the lining.

It is also not free. The solvent, the mechanical action, and above all the pressing (heat plus pressure) are cumulative. Over-dry-cleaning is one of the most common ways people wear out good clothes: colours flatten, the canvas and interlinings of a tailored jacket lose their loft, and knitted or napped surfaces go glassy.

A useful distinction, and one worth knowing because most people have it backwards. Under the US care labeling rule, “Dry clean” means dry cleaning is a safe method. It does not mean it is the only method or the best one. “Dry clean only” is the stronger statement: the maker is warning you that the garment should not be washed. Treat “only” as binding. Treat “dry clean” without “only” as one option among several, and consider whether airing, steaming, and spot cleaning will get you to the next wear.

Reasonable intervals for regular wear. A tailored jacket, once or twice a season, or when it is genuinely soiled. A suit, cleaned as a set so the pieces age evenly, even though the trousers are worn harder than the jacket. A coat, once at the end of the season before it is stored. Blouses, shirts, and anything worn directly against the skin need attention far more often, and many of them are better washed than dry cleaned.

Do not take to a general dry cleaner: leather, suede, shearling, or nubuck, all of which need a specialist leather cleaner who will re-oil and re-finish the skin afterward. Technical shells with a waterproof membrane or a durable water repellent finish, which solvent will strip. Anything heavily beaded, sequinned, or bonded, unless the label explicitly says otherwise. When in doubt, ask the cleaner to tell you what they intend to do before they do it.

Two small things. Take the plastic off as soon as you get home, because it traps residual solvent and moisture. And always clean a garment before it goes into storage, never after it comes out.

Cotton

The largest part of what we carry, and the most forgiving.

Clean: Machine wash cold to warm on a normal or gentle cycle depending on weight, with a mild detergent. Turn dark and indigo-dyed cotton inside out to protect the surface. Wash garment-dyed, over-dyed, and deep-indigo pieces separately for the first several washes, because they will release colour. Bleach only on undyed white, and preferably not at all.

Dry: Air drying is better than machine drying in almost every case. If you use a dryer, use low heat and take the garment out slightly damp. Heavy cotton knits (sweatshirts, jersey, rib) hold their shape better dried flat.

Store: Folded or hung, either is fine. Knitted cotton should be folded.

The mistake that ruins it: Repeated high heat. Hot water and a hot dryer shrink cotton, fade dyes, and break down the surface. The damage is gradual, so people rarely connect it to the cause.

Denim, and raw or selvedge denim in particular

Ordinary washed denim is cotton and can be treated as cotton: cold wash, inside out, hang to dry.

Raw denim is a different proposition, and a meaningful share of what we carry from 3Sixteen is raw or lightly rinsed selvedge. Raw denim has not been washed or artificially distressed at the mill. Indigo is a ring dye that sits on the outside of each yarn rather than penetrating it, so the fabric abrades and lightens where your body actually moves. The fades are a record of wear, and washing is what resets the clock.

When to wash it first. There is no rule here, only preference, and the folklore has become unhelpfully strict. Waiting lets creases set at your knees, hips, and hems, which is why people wait. But nothing is harmed by washing a pair earlier, and denim worn hard for months without cleaning is simply dirty. Wash it when it needs it. Do not put jeans in the freezer, which is an internet habit that does not clean anything.

How to wash it. 3Sixteen recommends hand washing the first several times to protect the indigo and to prevent the marbling that machine agitation causes. Turn the jeans inside out, empty the pockets, and submerge them fully in a tub of cool to lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent (a dark-safe liquid or a plain castile soap). The water will turn a murky green. That is indigo and dirt, and it is normal. Agitate gently every few minutes for about fifteen minutes, flipping them so they do not float. Do not scrub. Drain, rinse with fresh water, press the water out without wringing, and hang to dry in warm, well-ventilated air.

Once the creases have set, a front-loading machine on cold and gentle is safe. Avoid top-loading machines with a centre agitator, which leave fade lines that read as marbling.

Shrinkage. Most modern selvedge denim is sanforized and will shrink modestly, in the region of half an inch in waist and length, when washed cool and hung to dry. Unsanforized or loomstate denim (sometimes labelled kibata) shrinks a great deal more and normally needs a soak before it is worn at all. If you do not know which you have, ask us before the first wash rather than after.

Crocking. Raw indigo transfers. Pale upholstery, light bags, white sneakers, and car seats are all at risk in the first months.

The mistake that ruins it: A hot machine wash and a hot tumble dry, especially the first time. It shrinks the pair out of its fit, flattens the fades you have been building, and sets hard creases in the wrong places.

Wool, including virgin wool and merino

Clean: Wool needs washing less often than almost anything else you own, because it resists odour, stains, and creasing on its own. When it does need cleaning, hand wash in lukewarm water, no warmer than about 30°C, with a neutral wool detergent. Machine washing is fine only if the label permits it, on a dedicated wool or delicates cycle, with the garment turned inside out or in a mesh bag. Avoid biological or enzyme detergents, which digest protein fibres, and avoid anything containing bleach. Tailored wool goes to a cleaner rather than into water.

Dry: Press the water out gently, never wring, and dry flat in the shade. Do not tumble dry unless the garment is specifically labelled as safe for it.

Store: Knitwear folded. Tailoring on a broad, shaped hanger with room on either side, never on wire. Clean before long storage.

The mistake that ruins it: Felting. Heat, agitation, and alkalinity together cause the scales on the wool fibre to interlock, and the garment shrinks and hardens. It is not reversible. A wool sweater in a hot machine wash is gone.

Cashmere

Everything under wool applies, more so.

Clean: Hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool or cashmere detergent, ten minutes at most, with minimal handling. Rinse in cool water until it runs clear.

Dry: Lift the garment out supporting its whole weight, press the water out between two towels, reshape it to its proper dimensions while damp, and dry flat away from sun and radiators.

Store: Folded, always, and clean. For seasonal storage, use a sealed box or bag once the garment is completely dry.

Pilling is normal and is not a defect. New cashmere sheds short fibres as it settles, most noticeably in the first several wears, and pills form where the garment rubs against itself and against bags and seatbelts. Remove them with a cashmere comb or a purpose-made sweater stone, working in one direction. Washing actually reduces pilling over time.

The mistake that ruins it: Hanging it. A cashmere sweater on a hanger stretches at the shoulders and the neck within weeks, and the distortion does not come back out. The close second is storing it unwashed, which is an invitation to moths.

Mohair, alpaca, and other hair fibres

Treat these as cashmere. Two additions.

Some shedding in the first several wears is characteristic of how these yarns are spun and will settle. And a soft-bristled brush, used sparingly, will lift and separate the hairs on a brushed mohair or a long-haired alpaca when they start to tangle. Over-brushing thins the surface, so do it only when it is needed.

Silk

Clean: If the label says dry clean only, believe it. Some silks, particularly satins, dupions, and anything with a lustrous finish, will water-spot or lose their hand permanently. Where hand washing is permitted, use cool water and a pH-neutral, enzyme-free detergent, keep the soak under half an hour, and do not rub or wring. Never bleach silk.

Dry: Roll in a towel to absorb water, then hang or lay flat away from direct sunlight, which yellows and weakens silk faster than any other common fibre.

Iron: On the lowest setting, on the reverse, while slightly damp, with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Store: Hung on a padded hanger for structured pieces, folded with acid-free tissue for anything fine, and always out of the light.

The mistake that ruins it: Antiperspirant and perspiration together. The combination breaks down silk at the underarm and sets a stain that will not come out, and it does its work quietly over a season. Let lotions and antiperspirants dry fully before dressing, and clean silk that has been worn against the skin rather than putting it away.

Linen and hemp

Clean: Linen is strong when wet and takes washing well. Machine wash cool to warm on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, and do not overload the machine, since linen needs room to move. No bleach on coloured linen.

Dry: Line dry or dry flat. If you use a dryer, use low heat and remove the garment while it is still noticeably damp.

Iron: While damp, on a hot setting, or steam it. Linen presses beautifully when wet and stubbornly when dry.

Store: Folded or hung. Avoid long storage under compression, which sets hard creases along the folds.

The mistake that ruins it: Tumbling it hot until bone dry. It sets creases into the fibre, roughens the hand, and shortens the life of a cloth that should outlast you. Linen is supposed to crease as you wear it. That is the fibre, not a fault, and it is most of why people love it.

Paper and washi

Washi is Japanese paper, made traditionally from the inner bark of kozo, mitsumata, and gampi. Paper yarn is made by cutting a sheet of it into a narrow ribbon and twisting that ribbon into a continuous strand, which is then knitted or woven like any other yarn. So what you are holding is cloth. It behaves like cloth, it launders like cloth, and the first thing to say about it is the thing everyone braces for and nobody needs to: washi does not dissolve. Water will not take it apart.

It sits here, after linen and hemp, because it belongs to them. These are all bast fibres, and paper carries the family character: light, dry to the hand, cool to wear, crisp when it is new, and inclined to crease. What separates it is the yarn rather than the fibre. A cut and twisted ribbon is not a spun staple, and that difference is most of what follows.

Washi softens as it is rubbed, and washing is a form of rubbing. Every cleaning moves the hand a little further from crisp and a little further toward soft and textured. That is the material doing what it was chosen to do, and it is not damage, but it only travels in one direction. Clean it when it needs cleaning rather than on a schedule.

Paper is very often blended. Where it is, assume the paper governs unless the label tells you otherwise, and read the section on multi-material garments below.

Clean: Read the label first. These garments vary more between makers than almost anything else on this page, and some are built for the machine while others are not. Where washing is permitted, hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent and keep it brief. Do not leave it to soak. Time in the water is where shrinkage comes from, far more than temperature. Do not scrub, and do not work hard at one spot, because a twisted ribbon frays where it is abraded rather than distributing the wear along its length, and a broken strand in a knit does not knit back. No bleach.

Dry: Press the water out gently and do not wring. Hang or lay flat in moving air, out of direct sun. Do not tumble dry. Between a long soak and a hot tumble you have both causes of shrinkage in a paper garment, and neither is recoverable.

Iron: Low, on the reverse, with a pressing cloth, or steam it from a little distance instead. Heavy pressing crushes the twist in the yarn and leaves a flattened, faintly glazed surface where the texture used to be.

Store: Folded loosely, never under compression. Paper yarn takes a hard fold more readily than most cloth and holds it longer. Knitted paper is folded rather than hung, for the same reason as any other knit.

The mistake that ruins it: A long soak followed by a hot tumble. People handle paper cautiously because they expect it to disintegrate, which it will not do, and then shrink it in the two ordinary ways instead. It is not the water. It is how long it sits in it and how hot it gets afterward.

Leather, suede, and nubuck

Clean: Not at home, and not at an ordinary dry cleaner. Leather goes to a specialist leather cleaner who will clean, re-oil, and re-finish the skin. Between times, wipe smooth leather with a barely damp cloth and let it dry naturally. Brush suede and nubuck with a proper suede brush, and lift marks with a suede eraser. Use only products made for the specific leather you have, and test them somewhere hidden first.

Condition: Sparingly, once or twice a year on a jacket in regular wear, and less on anything with a matte or waxed finish that is meant to look dry. Over-conditioning darkens leather permanently and clogs the surface.

Dry: If it gets wet, hang it on a broad hanger at room temperature and let it dry slowly, away from any heat source.

Store: On a wide, shaped hanger, in a breathable cotton cover, never in plastic, and never in a damp closet. Give it air on both sides.

The mistake that ruins it: Heat. A radiator, a hairdryer, a hot car, or a sunlit window will drive the oils out of the skin, and it stiffens and then cracks. Nothing brings it back.

Exotic skins

Read this section instead of the one above it, not alongside it. Python and the scaled skins generally are leather in the narrow sense that they are tanned hide, and almost nothing in the leather section is safe on them. This is the one place on this page where following the neighbouring advice in good faith will do the damage.

The reason is structural. A calfskin is a continuous surface, and everything the leather section recommends assumes that surface: a cream is absorbed into it, an oil is drawn through it, a finish sits on it evenly. A scaled skin is not continuous. It is a field of overlapping plates, each one anchored along one edge and free along the other, lying on a thin layer of hide. Every failure an exotic skin has begins at that free edge.

What not to do. Four things, all of them ordinary leather practice, all of them wrong here.

Conditioner, cream, and oil. None of them. A conditioner has nowhere to be absorbed on a scaled skin, so it collects underneath the free edge of each scale, softens the bond holding the scale down, and lifts it away from the hide. A lifted scale catches, then snags, then goes, and it does not go back on. Oils darken unevenly at the same time and can curl the edges. This is the most common way a python piece is destroyed, and it is almost always done carefully, by someone following advice written for calf.

Saddle soap and household cleaners. No. They strip the finish and dry out the scale edges, which is the beginning of the same failure by a slower route.

Heat. No hairdryer, no radiator, no sunlit windowsill, no hot car. Heat shrinks the hide underneath faster than the scales sitting on top of it, and the scales have to go somewhere. They lift.

Water. Do not wash it, do not submerge it, and do not go at a mark with a wet cloth. Water travels under the scales, swells the hide, and dries unevenly, and the mark it leaves behind is usually permanent and usually larger than the one you were treating. If a piece is caught in rain, blot it dry at once with a soft cloth and let it finish drying on its own at room temperature.

What to do instead. Very little, and always in one direction. Wipe it with a dry, soft cloth, moving from head to tail, which is to say with the scales rather than against them. A cloth, a cuff, or a pocket seam run the wrong way lifts each edge by a fraction, and the fractions accumulate. Handle it dry, handle it less, and let it be. A scaled skin that is left alone ages beautifully and one that is maintained enthusiastically does not.

Clean: A specialist in exotic skins, and not a general leather cleaner. This is a narrower referral than the one given for leather above, and the difference matters. Someone who does excellent work on calf and suede will reach for a conditioner, because that is what the craft teaches. Ask directly whether they work in reptile skins. If the answer is anything other than yes, go elsewhere.

Store: Flat, uncompressed, in a breathable cloth pouch, out of the light and away from damp. Never in plastic. Do not stack anything on top of it and do not overfill a small piece, because the scales stand proud of the surface and any pressure across them works against the same free edges. Light fades exotic skin noticeably, more so than it fades smooth leather.

Keep the papers with the object. Python is a CITES-listed species, and a piece made from it comes with documentation for that reason. Keep the certification with the item rather than filed somewhere else, and if you intend to travel across a border with it, check what is required well before you go.

One caution about generalising. Exotic skin is not a single material. Python, lizard, alligator, crocodile, and stingray are tanned differently, finished differently, and do not all want the same handling, and some of them will accept treatments that python will not. What is written above is the conservative position and it is the correct one for a scaled snakeskin. If you own something else and want to do more than wipe it dry, ask first.

One exotic skin is not covered here at all. Eel has no scales, so nothing in the mechanism above describes it, and on the central question the two want opposite things: a scaled skin must never be conditioned and an eel must be. It has a section of its own, immediately below. If eel is what you own, read that one instead of this one.

The mistake that ruins it: Conditioner. Leather advice applied to a scaled skin, in good faith, by someone trying to look after it properly. It lifts the scales, and nobody can put them back.

Eel and smooth exotic skins

Read this section instead of the one above it, not alongside it. Eel is an exotic skin and it is not a scaled one, so almost nothing in the scaled-skins section applies to it, and the most important instruction in that section is the exact reverse of the right answer here. This is the second place on this page where following the neighbouring advice in good faith will do the damage, and it is the only place where the two neighbours contradict one another outright.

The reason is structural, as it was above. A scaled skin is a surface of separate overlapping plates, each one anchored along a single edge and free along the other, and every instruction in that section is derived from that free edge. Eel has no scales at all. It is smooth and continuous, remarkably thin, and very strong for its thinness, and in how it wants to be handled it sits far closer to a fine calfskin than to a python.

So it is fed rather than left alone. If you take one sentence from this section, take that one. A thin skin that is never conditioned dries, stiffens, and in time cracks, which means the instruction that protects a python is the instruction that ruins an eel. Nothing else on this page reverses like that.

The second thing to know is that an eel panel is built rather than cut. A single skin is long and narrow, so a piece large enough to make a shoe, a bag, or a belt from is produced by seaming many narrow strips side by side. The fine parallel lines running across the surface are that construction showing, and they are not a flaw. They are also where the object carries its stress, because a seamed panel concentrates strain at the joins in a way a single hide does not. On almost anything made from eel, the seams go before the surface does.

What the material actually is, because it decides who you take it to. Eel leather in the trade is conventionally not eel. It is hagfish, most often Pacific hagfish, and the great majority of it is tanned in Korea, where the animal is a food fish and the skin is a by-product of that. That is worth knowing for one practical reason rather than as a curiosity. A hagfish is not a reptile, so the reptile specialist the section above sends you to is the wrong referral for this skin, and asking for one is how an eel piece ends up being handled as though it were python.

Condition: Lightly, with a cream-based conditioner made for fine or exotic leathers rather than a heavy oil or a general boot cream. Apply it thinly with a soft cloth and buff it off. A thin skin takes up far less than a thick one, and whatever it cannot absorb sits on the surface and darkens it unevenly. This section gives no interval and no schedule. How often a piece wants feeding depends on how the skin was finished and on how hard the piece is worn, and we would rather you asked us than followed a number invented for a page.

Water: It will darken eel, and the colour generally comes back as the skin dries. Blot a wet piece with a soft cloth and let it finish drying at room temperature, away from heat. Do not rub it and do not stretch it while it is wet, which is when a fine skin distorts most easily and when the seams are under the most strain.

Clean: A soft dry or barely damp cloth, and nothing further at home. For anything beyond that, a specialist, and tell them at the outset that it is eel rather than letting them assume reptile. A good exotics cleaner will ask; a general leather cleaner will not, and the two skins want opposite things.

Store: Dry, cool, and dark, in a breathable pouch or box and never in plastic. Support the shape rather than letting the piece fold onto itself, and do not compress it across a seam line for any length of time. Keep it away from radiators, sunlit windowsills, and hot cars, which will dry a thin skin faster than anything you could do to it deliberately.

And the label wins here as it does everywhere else on this page. If the piece came with a care card, follow the card. Whoever finished the skin knows what they put on it, and we do not.

One caution about generalising. This section is written for eel. It carries the smooth exotic skins in its heading because eel is not the only unscaled skin that could arrive here, and because someone holding an unusual smooth skin should land somewhere rather than nowhere. But ostrich, to take the one most likely to turn up, is quill-follicle leather and is neither scaled nor smooth, and it is not written here. If what you own is not eel, treat everything above as the general direction of travel and ask before you act on any of it.

The mistake that ruins it: Reading the section above this one and applying it. Eel is not scaled, and leaving a fine skin dry on the belief that conditioner lifts something is how it is allowed to crack.

Shearling and sheepskin

Shearling is one hide with the wool still attached to it. A skin on one face, a fleece on the other, and no way to separate them. That is the whole problem. Everything above about leather applies to one side of the garment, everything above about wool applies to the other, and neither routine on its own is safe, because whatever you do to one face you are also doing to the other.

Clean: Not at home, and not at a general dry cleaner. This is a firmer prohibition than the one we gave for leather. The solvent, the mechanical action, and the pressing that a cleaner uses on cloth will strip the oils that keep the skin supple, and the skin stiffens, shrinks, and in time cracks. The fleece side goes matted and harsh at the same time, and the two faces shrink at different rates, which is the failure particular to shearling. Take it to a specialist in leather and shearling who will clean, re-oil, and re-finish both faces. The fur and shearling trade advises cleaning the fleece side about once a year and touching the skin side only when it is genuinely soiled, since working on the skin wears the finish. That once a year is best spent at the end of the season, before the garment goes away, which is the rule everywhere else on this page as well.

Between cleanings, do very little. Shake it out. Brush the fleece with a soft brush. Blot a spill on the skin side promptly with a barely damp cloth, working from the outside of the mark inward, and do not rub. Never put a shearling in a washing machine. Agitation felts the wool and shrinks the skin, and no part of that comes back.

Dry: Rain, sleet, and snow will not harm a shearling that is handled promptly. Shake the water off, hang it on a broad hanger in moving air at room temperature, and let it take its time. No hairdryer, no space heater, no radiator, and no sunlit car. Direct heat drives the moisture and the oil out of the skin faster than the skin can recover, and it stiffens and then cracks. If the garment is soaked through rather than damp, take it to the specialist for reconditioning instead of drying it hard.

Condition: We are not going to give you a schedule. Re-oiling a shearling is part of what a specialist does when they clean it, and the household leather conditioners sold for smooth leather will stain a suede-finished skin and mat the fleece. If your piece feels dry, that is a reason to see the specialist, not a reason to open a bottle.

Store: Clean it first, always. Then hang it on a broad, shaped hanger substantial enough to carry the weight. A shearling coat is among the heaviest garments anyone owns, and a thin or wire hanger will press a point into each shoulder within a season that does not come out. Give it real width on both sides, because compression crushes the pile and sets creases the fleece will not release. Never plastic. Here the shearling trade goes a step further than we did on leather: it advises hanging shearling uncovered rather than in a bag of any kind, on the grounds that the skin needs air and a cover holds moisture against it. Cold storage over the summer if you have access to it. And note one exception to the storage section below, which is that cedar and mothballs, reasonable enough around wool, are not recommended in contact with shearling, since the oils and the vapours can dry and discolour the skin. Cleanliness, air, and darkness are the protection here.

The mistake that ruins it: An ordinary dry cleaner. It is the most expensive mistake on this page, it is made in good faith by people who are trying to look after the garment, and by the time it comes back stiff and shrunken there is nothing anyone can do.

When a garment is more than one material

This guide is organised by fibre. A coat is not.

A single jacket may be shearling at the shell, calf leather at the collar and the plackets, cupro in the lining, cotton in the pocket bags, and a fused interlining nobody will ever see. Look each of those up on this page and you will get four correct answers and no way to reconcile them. Outerwear is where this happens most, because outerwear is where makers combine materials on purpose. Here is how to think about it.

The most delicate component governs. Not the largest, not the most visible, and not the one the garment is named after. The whole garment can only take what its most vulnerable part can take. A wool coat lined in cupro is cleaned on cupro’s terms. A cotton jacket with a leather collar does not go in water at all, because the collar cannot, and the collar might be two percent of the garment by weight. This is also the answer to a question people ask us often, which is why a simple-looking jacket carries a care label that seems far too cautious for the cloth. Usually the label is not about the cloth. It is about the trim.

Read the whole label, not the first line. Fibre content on a lined garment is normally given component by component, shell and lining and trim listed separately, while the care symbols apply to the assembled article. That is the point of them. The symbols have already done the reconciling for you, and where they seem stricter than the shell deserves, that is the maker telling you something about a part of the garment you cannot see.

When the shell and the lining disagree. This is the common case and it has no clean solution, because the two are sewn together and will be for as long as the garment exists. You cannot clean them separately. What follows from that is awkward: the lining is usually both the more delicate part and the dirtier part, since it is the part worn against the skin, so the garment gets cleaned on the lining’s terms and therefore not often enough to keep the lining clean. The way out is not more cleaning. It is less soiling. Let lotions and antiperspirants dry fully before dressing, air the garment inside out, and wear something between yourself and the lining where you can. When it does go to the cleaner, say that the lining is the problem, because solvent is comparatively poor at the water-based soil that lives there and a garment can come back beautifully pressed with the salts still in it.

When one component cannot be cleaned by any ordinary method. Leather, suede, nubuck, shearling, fur, and bonded or laminated constructions all fall here, and the rule is unforgiving: once any of them is present, in any quantity, the entire garment is a specialist’s job. A leather trim on a wool coat makes the whole coat a leather cleaner’s garment. There is no home routine for this and no general cleaner who should be attempting it.

So the honest instruction is the plain one. This goes to a specialist, and you tell them what is inside it. Bring the label. Name every material you know of, including the lining, including anything you were told when you bought it, and including anything that is only trim. Someone working on a skin needs to know there is a regenerated cellulose lining that will not take the same heat, or a fused interlining that will blister, or a bonded panel that will delaminate. A good specialist will protect or remove what they know about. They cannot protect what nobody mentioned.

Where these garments actually fail. Rarely in the middle of a panel. Almost always at the junctions: the seam where two materials with different shrinkage meet, the adhesive in a bonded or fused layer, the stitch line where a leather trim is set into a woven shell. Everything moves a little in cleaning, and different materials move by different amounts, so a cycle that every component would survive on its own can still pucker the seam between two of them. That is a tailoring repair once it has happened, which is why the whole strategy here is prevention: clean less, clean cooler, clean gently, and clean at a specialist whenever a skin is involved.

Store it on the terms of its most demanding part. The heaviest component decides the hanger, and the most breathable-sensitive component decides the covering. A coat with a shearling or leather shell wants a broad hanger, air on both sides, and no plastic, whatever the lining would have tolerated.

The mistake that ruins it: Cleaning it on the shell’s terms. The shell is what you see, it is what the garment is called, and it is what people describe at the counter, and it is almost never the part that fails. What fails is the lining, the trim, the seam between two materials, or the glue. Describe the whole garment, not the part it is named after.

Viscose and other regenerated cellulosics

Viscose (also sold as rayon) is the fibre that most often surprises people. It loses a great deal of its strength when wet and can shrink significantly in a hot wash.

Clean: Follow the label closely here, more than anywhere else. Many viscose garments are labelled dry clean for good reason. Where washing is permitted, hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, keep the soak brief, and support the garment’s weight when you lift it out.

Dry: Press water out between towels. Dry flat. Never hang a viscose garment while it is wet, because it will stretch under its own weight.

The mistake that ruins it: A hot machine wash followed by a tumble dry. Viscose can shrink dramatically, and the shrinkage is not recoverable.

Cupro, and the lining question

Cupro is a regenerated cellulose fibre. Cotton linter is dissolved in a copper and ammonia solution and spun back out as a fine filament, which is where the name comes from. You may also see it sold as Bemberg, which is Asahi Kasei’s brand and effectively the only cupro still in production, or as vegan silk, which is a description of how it feels rather than what it is.

That distinction matters, because cupro handles like silk and behaves like viscose. It is the fibre in the section above, made a different way. It is at its weakest wet, losing something in the region of a third to a half of its dry strength once it is saturated, and it stretches further under load at exactly the same time. Cupro holds up somewhat better wet than ordinary viscose does, and you will find sources that take that a step further and tell you cupro does not weaken when wet at all. Treat that as optimistic. The conservative reading is the one to follow.

Clean: Read the label, and on a lined garment read the shell’s label first, because it governs. Where cupro is the garment itself rather than the lining, hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, keep the soak brief, handle it as little as possible, and support its whole weight when you lift it out. A delicates cycle at 30°C in a mesh bag is acceptable where the label permits it. No hot water, no bleach, and no enzyme detergent. Cupro can shrink considerably in a hot wash, and the shrinkage is not recoverable.

Dry: Press the water out between towels, never wring, and dry flat, out of direct sunlight, which degrades regenerated cellulose steadily. Do not hang it wet. It will stretch under its own weight while it is at its weakest, and it will not come back.

Iron: Low, on the reverse, with a pressing cloth. Better still, steam it from a little distance rather than pressing it at all.

The lining question. Most people meet cupro without knowing it, as the lining of a jacket or a coat whose outer shell is wool, leather, or shearling. The shell and the lining have almost nothing in common as far as cleaning goes, and four things follow from that.

The shell governs, because you cannot clean a lining on its own. The lining is usually both the dirtiest part of the garment and the part that never gets attention, since it is the part worn against the skin. Perspiration and antiperspirant do to cupro roughly what they do to silk, weakening the fibre at the underarm and setting a mark, and because solvent cleaning is comparatively poor at water-based soil, a jacket can come back pressed and still carry salts in the lining. Say so at the counter. Ask the cleaner to address the lining specifically.

When a lining draws up shorter than the shell, or puckers along the seams, that is almost always the lining having shrunk on a cycle the shell shrugged off. It is a tailoring repair rather than something a second cleaning will resolve, and the prevention is cool, conservative cleaning and telling the cleaner what the lining is.

And on a leather or shearling jacket with a cupro lining there is no version of this you do at home. It goes to the specialist leather cleaner, who handles both faces, and it is worth mentioning the lining when you drop it off, because someone working on a skin needs to know there is a regenerated cellulose inside that will not take the same heat.

The mistake that ruins it: Treating the lining as though it were not there. A shell can be immaculate and the garment still be failing quietly on the inside, and by the time the lining splits at the underarm or draws short at the hem, the cleaning that would have prevented it is years behind you.

Polyester, nylon, and technical cloth

Clean: Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle. Skip fabric softener entirely, and especially on anything technical, where it leaves a residue that clogs the fabric and defeats its water repellency. For a waterproof or water-repellent shell, use a wash made for technical fabrics rather than ordinary detergent.

Dry: Air dry, or tumble on low. If a technical shell’s label permits it, a short tumble on low heat will redistribute the durable water repellent finish and restore beading. Never use high heat on synthetics at all.

Store: Hung, with room. Down and insulated pieces should be stored loose rather than compressed.

The mistake that ruins it: High heat. Synthetics melt and glaze before they burn, and a hot iron or a hot dryer will leave a shine you cannot remove. Iron on the lowest setting, on the reverse, with a pressing cloth, or better, steam it instead.

Elastane and acrylic in blends

Elastane appears in small percentages in stretch wovens and knits, and it is the component that heat destroys first. Cool wash, no fabric softener, and no tumble drying. When a stretch garment goes slack and stops recovering, heat is almost always the reason.

Acrylic takes low heat and pills readily. Wash cool, dry flat, and never press it with a hot iron.

PVC, coated cloth, and bags

A tiled bag is rigid polyvinyl plates set onto a flexible mesh base. That sentence is worth reading twice, because the care follows from the geometry rather than from the material, and almost everyone gets this wrong in the same direction.

A panel of coated cloth flexes across its whole surface and spreads the load as it moves. A tiled surface cannot do that. The tiles do not bend at all, so every fold the bag makes has to happen in the mesh between them, and the mesh takes all of it. That is also what makes these bags handsome, since the plates break and reassemble the light as the shape changes, but it means the plastic is rarely the part that fails. The mesh is the hinge, and the hinge is what goes.

Carry it lighter than it will hold. The weight in one of these does not rest on the tiles. It hangs from the mesh along the hinge lines and concentrates at the handle attachments and the corners, which is exactly where the most folding is already happening. A tiled bag loaded to capacity with something dense is being asked to do the single thing its construction is least suited to, and it will tell you so at a seam rather than at a tile.

Clean: Wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth and dry it at once with a second cloth. Nothing else at all. The makers of these bags are explicit that no soap, detergent, solvent, thinner, or benzene should come near them, and that instruction is worth following to the letter rather than in spirit. Solvent clouds and softens the plates and attacks the bond between plate and mesh, and that bond is not something anyone can repair afterward. Do not submerge it, do not put it in a machine, and do not work liquid into the joints, because water that gets underneath a tile stays there.

If it gets wet: wipe it dry with a soft cloth and leave it at room temperature to finish. Do not try to speed it up.

Heat is the real weakness. The plates are heat sensitive and so is the bond holding them down. A hot car, a sunlit window, a radiator, or a closed trunk in August will soften a plate enough to distort it permanently and can loosen the bond while it does. This is not the gradual damage that heat does to leather over years. One afternoon is enough.

Store: In the dust bag or box it came in, somewhere ventilated, out of direct sunlight, away from heat and away from humidity. Keep it in its own shape, lightly filled if it needs the support, and do not fold it flat against the tile grid or stack anything on top of it. A crease held across a hinge line for a season is a crease the mesh keeps.

Two things about surfaces. Prolonged contact with printed matter, newspaper and magazines in particular, can bleed colour into the material, so do not store one pressed against print or leave it sitting on a stack of paper. And the corners of the plates are points. They will snag fine knitwear, silk, and anything loosely woven that they are carried against, which is a hazard to your clothes rather than to the bag, and it is better known in advance than discovered on a cashmere sleeve.

A scratch on a glossy or metallic plate is in the surface finish itself, and there is no polishing it out. These are materials that show their life, which is worth accepting early.

The mistake that ruins it: Treating it as leather. Synthetic leather is not leather, and a tiled bag is not even a panel. Conditioner leaves a film on a coated surface that neither absorbs nor comes off, and a leather cleaner’s solvent is the one thing the tile bond cannot survive. Both are done by people who correctly recognise a good bag and then reach for the wrong shelf.

A word on Japanese and Italian cloth

A great deal of what we carry comes from two places with very different traditions, and it is worth knowing which you are holding.

Japanese cloth, at W Department, usually means indigo. Selvedge denim, dyed cottons, and over-dyed pieces are made to change, and their first months are the most active. Expect colour release in early washes, expect transfer onto lighter materials, and wash these pieces alone until they settle. The instinct to protect the colour is the wrong one. These cloths were designed to move.

Italian cloth more often means the opposite problem. Fine-gauge wools, cashmere blends, high-twist suitings, and open weaves are light, technically accomplished, and structurally more delicate than they look. The hand of the finished cloth is part of the design, and it is what aggressive cleaning and heavy pressing flatten first. Clean these less, press them lightly or not at all, and let a good cleaner know they are handling something fine.

Storage, and the moth problem

Moths do not eat clean wool with much enthusiasm. They are drawn to perspiration, body oils, and food residue on the fibre, which means the single most effective thing you can do is to clean everything before it goes away for the season, not after it comes back out.

Beyond that: store animal fibres in sealed boxes or bags rather than open shelves. Keep the closet dry and let air move through it. Cedar and lavender are mild deterrents at best and lose their effect as they dry out, so refresh or lightly sand cedar and do not rely on it alone. Pheromone traps catch males only, so they tell you that you have a problem rather than solving one, which is still worth knowing early. And keep everything out of direct sunlight, which fades dye and weakens silk and wool over time.
