Double gauze is a cloth made of two very open layers bound together at intervals rather than one dense one, and the point of it is that the air is inside the fabric instead of around it. It breathes like something almost transparent while behaving like something with body, it does not go see-through the way a single gauze does, and it gets softer with every wash without thinning. The wavy check is a consequence of the same construction. A check woven into an open, slack cloth cannot hold a right angle, so the lines drift and bow and the grid never resolves, which is closer to a spider’s web than to a plaid. It is irregular because the weave is honest, not because anybody drew it that way. Forty percent linen is the other half of it, adding dryness, slub, and the particular way linen creases and then relaxes.
Why we selected it
Almost every shirt in this weight class is a lightweight poplin or a chambray, and both go limp in heat. This one has texture and body at a weight you can wear in August, which is a combination we look for constantly and rarely find. The corozo buttons are the other reason. Corozo is a nut, cut and polished like a shell, and it is the button that ages at the same rate as a good shirt.

Materials and construction
Sixty percent cotton and forty percent linen, in a double-layered check gauze. Made in Portugal. Black and ecru. Two matching chest pockets, a straight back yoke, contrast stitching, and corozo fisheye buttons. Garment rinsed and finished.
Fit notes
A work shirt cut, roomy through the body with a straight yoke rather than a fitted one, meant to be worn open over a tee as readily as closed. Because the cloth is rinsed after making there is very little shrinkage left in it. Double gauze relaxes considerably across the first month and then stays where it lands, so a shirt that feels slightly crisp on day one will not stay that way.
Styling
Open over the Pima tee in white with the Drawstring Short, which is the whole of a hot day. Closed with the Service Pant for something plainer. Black and ecru is a high-contrast pattern that behaves like a neutral from any distance, so it sits against indigo, olive, and black without a fight.
Care
Machine wash cool and hang to dry. Linen and cotton together want no heat at all: the dryer is what hardens linen and what flattens the loft that makes a double gauze worth having.
