Ann Demeulemeester Sas Cropped Stand Collar Blouson

Two decisions carry this jacket, and both of them are about refusing softness. The first is the collar. A stand collar rises from the neckline and stays up, with no fold and no lapel, which removes the horizontal that a conventional collar puts across the chest and leaves a single vertical running from the shoulders to the jaw. On a jacket that stops at the waist that is the whole line of the garment, and it is the reason this reads as severe from across a room when nothing about it is loud.

The second is the leather. Grained rather than smooth, so the surface carries a visible texture instead of the corrected, even finish that most garment leather is polished into, and finished vintage, so it arrives already looking used rather than waiting to be broken in. Those two together are a deliberate argument against newness. A polished blouson announces that it has just been bought. This one does not, and it will be less distinguishable from its fifth year than it is from its first.

The blouson shape does the rest: cropped, bloused slightly through the body, and gathered at the waist, which is a shape built for movement rather than for tailoring.

Why we selected it

We wanted one leather piece from this house and it had to be the severe one, because that is the half of the label’s reputation people arrive with and the half that has to be true. This is. The stand collar is also the detail that makes it wearable in practice rather than only in principle: a cropped leather jacket with a lapel is a costume, and a cropped leather jacket with a hard vertical neck is a garment you can put on over almost anything.

Ann Demeulemeester founded the house in 1985 and left it in 2013; Stefano Gallici has led the design since 2023. The severe, undecorated leather has been constant across all of them.

Materials and construction

Fit notes

Cropped, so it ends at or above the waist and what is worn underneath is visible below it rather than hidden. A stand collar sits close to the neck and does not accommodate a scarf or a high-necked knit underneath comfortably, which is worth knowing before ordering. Leather relaxes across the width with wear and does not lengthen, so size for the shoulder and the sleeve rather than for the body. We do not hold measurements and would rather you tried it or called us.

Styling

Over a plain top with a high-waisted trouser, so the crop lands where the waistband is and the two meet rather than gap. Over the Stee blouse if you want volume under something hard. With the Treze Bootcut Trousers, where the short jacket is what lets a flared leg read as long.

Care

Leather does not get washed and does not go near direct heat, which includes a radiator, a car dashboard, and the inside of a plastic garment bag. A vintage finish is worked into the surface, so a solvent cleaner can take it off unevenly; take it to a leather specialist who is told how it is finished rather than to a general cleaner.
