Ann Demeulemeester Via Belt Tote Bag

A soft bag and a structured bag are different objects with the same function. A structured bag keeps its shape whether or not anything is in it, which is reassuring and also means it takes up its full volume permanently. A soft bag collapses to what it is carrying. This one is firmly the second kind: the calf skin is unlined enough to fold, the closure is magnetic rather than framed, and the whole thing goes flat when empty. The semi-gloss finish is the detail worth noticing, sitting between matte leather that shows every mark and patent that shows none. It picks up light along the fold lines, which is where a soft bag is most interesting.

Why we selected it

Most bags of this kind are sold on structure. This one is sold on the hide, which is a harder argument to make and a better one.

The label was founded by Ann Demeulemeester in 1985 and has been designed by Stefano Gallici since 2023.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent calf leather with a semi-gloss finish, in black. Magnetic closure, with a small removable internal pouch.

Sizing and how it carries

A tote, carried on the shoulder or in the hand. Because it is unstructured it takes its shape from the contents, so it reads slimmer carrying little and fuller carrying more. The removable pouch is the part that keeps small items findable in a bag with no compartments.

How it is worn

On the shoulder with the body of the bag against the hip, which is where the fold lines fall best.

Care

Soft leather marks and then settles, and the semi-gloss finish will dull slightly along the fold lines with use, which is the bag ageing rather than failing. Keep it stuffed when stored so the folds do not set. Our care guidance covers leather.
