Ann Demeulemeester Agnes Jacket

Tailoring usually gets its shape from the cloth fighting back. Wool has memory, holds a pressed edge, and returns to it. Viscose does none of that, which is why a tailored viscose jacket is a genuinely difficult object and why most of them are disappointing. This one solves it at the shoulder. The padding is real and it is doing structural work, setting a line the rest of the jacket hangs from rather than relying on the cloth to hold itself up.
Below that the viscose is allowed to be what it is: fluid, slightly liquid in movement, catching light the way wool never does. The grosgrain ribbon at the closure is the house signature and the one hard detail on an otherwise soft garment. The effect is a jacket that photographs as tailoring and feels, wearing it, closer to a cardigan.
