A tartan in polyester is a decision rather than a compromise, and it is worth saying what it buys. A sett has no tolerance in it. The stripe widths have to hold their register or the check goes crooked, and a cloth that takes up moisture and moves with the weather is what puts a check out of true. Polyester does not move. It also holds a crease and weighs almost nothing, which is how a pattern this dense ends up on a skirt this light.

Blackwatch is the sett: a dark ground of blue, green, and black, dark enough that it behaves like a solid until you are standing close to it. The rest of the skirt is plain apart from two things, a deep vent at the center back and a lacing across the back. One hundred percent polyester, made in the USA.

Why we selected it

Polyester earns its place on a tartan, which is not a sentence we would write about many cloths. A dark sett this light does not really exist in wool, and the skirt could not be the thing it is in anything else. The lacing at the back is the second reason we took it.

This is the BLANK piece where the reference sits in the cloth rather than in the cut.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent polyester, in Blackwatch. A deep vent at the center back and a lacing across the back. Made in the USA. We do not hold a length, a waistband, a lining, or a closure for this skirt. We also do not tell you whether the lacing adjusts the fit or is set where it sits, because those are two different garments to anybody buying one, and we would rather you asked than guessed.

Fit notes

Sized on a short numeric run rather than on small, medium, and large. The cloth is light and it does not stretch, so the skirt will sit where it was cut. Whether the lacing gives you any adjustment at the back is the question that decides how forgiving this is, and it is not one anybody can answer without the skirt in front of them. We do not hold measurements. Call the store and someone will measure it and tell you what the lacing actually does.

Styling

Blackwatch is dark enough to sit against navy and against black, which is not true of most tartans and is most of why this one has stayed in use while brighter setts came and went. With a plain knit and a boot, where the skirt is the only pattern in play. The Cropped BDU Jacket over it puts two military ideas in one outfit without either of them doing an impression of the other.

Care

Polyester’s one real enemy is heat. Wash it cool on a gentle cycle, keep it out of a hot tumble dryer, and keep an iron off it, or use the lowest setting through a cloth, because a synthetic face will glaze under heat and the glaze is permanent. Air dry it on a hanger. Our care guidance covers the rest.
