Ripstop is a plain weave with a grid laid into it. At regular intervals a heavier yarn is woven in, warp and weft both, so the cloth is squared off into small cells, and a tear that starts anywhere runs to the edge of its cell and stops. It was worked out for parachutes and it stayed in uniform cloth because it does the thing a light cotton normally cannot, which is fail slowly. The grid is plain from close up and invisible from across a street.
On the Monkey Skirt it is the warm-weather answer. The same cargo shape, two large pockets at the sides and one at the back, the same deep vent at the center back, in something light enough to wear in August. One hundred percent cotton, in Olive, made in the USA.
Why we selected it
A cargo skirt in a heavy cloth is a winter garment, and most of them are. We wanted the version that works in heat, where the pockets still hold something and the skirt still weighs nothing, and a cotton ripstop is the one cloth that does both of those at once.
Cotton ripstop is uniform cloth before it is anything else, which is why it is the cloth BLANK keeps coming back to.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton, woven as ripstop, in Olive. Two large pockets at the sides, one at the back, and a deep vent at the center back. Made in the USA. We do not hold a length, a waistband description, or a closure for this skirt, and we describe none of them.
Fit notes
Sized on a short numeric run rather than on small, medium, and large. Ripstop is flat and light, so this hangs closer to the leg than the same skirt in corduroy does and it moves a great deal more. Loaded side pockets pull on a light cloth in a way they do not on a heavy one, which is worth knowing before you fill them. We do not hold measurements. Call the store and someone will measure it for you.
Styling
Olive is a uniform color and it behaves like one, which is to say it sits against white, against navy, and against black without asking anything of them. With a plain tee in heat and a boot the rest of the year. The Cropped BDU Jacket is cut in the same cloth and the same color, which makes the two of them either an argument or a suit, depending on how you feel about that.
Care
Wash it cool and hang it to dry. A light cotton creases and this one is light enough that it will, so press it warm if that bothers you and do not if it does not. Our care guidance covers the rest.
