Look at the chest. The darts are on the outside. A dart is the oldest device in dressmaking, a folded wedge of cloth that turns a flat panel into a shape, and it is always stitched on the inside, because the entire convention of tailoring is that the shaping should not show. Turning them out is not a decoration and it is not a shortcut; it takes the one structural element that makes the dress fit and puts it on the surface where it becomes the design. Everything else is quiet enough to let that happen. The zip is concealed. The pockets are in the side seams. There is a slit at the back hem so the skirt can be walked in. The cloth is a Japanese wool twill in black, which is a dense, dry, matte cloth that takes light without shine, and the lining is a soft off-white cotton rather than a slippery synthetic, so the dress feels like cloth against the skin rather than like a garment with an interior. The neck and the hem are left raw, which is the house’s signature and here reads as the only ornament in the building.

Why we selected it

A black dress is the most conventional thing a store can carry and the easiest to get wrong, because almost all of them are conventional all the way through. This one is conventional in silhouette and radical in construction, which is the version that gets worn for twenty years.

This house turns construction outward rather than hiding it, and exterior darts on a black dress are the shortest demonstration of that anywhere in its work.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent wool twill, described as Japanese, made in Ukraine. Exterior darts at the chest, concealed zip entry, side seam pockets, and a slit at the back hem. Raw details at the neck and the hem. Soft off-white cotton lining. Color: Black.

Fit notes

The exterior darts mean the shaping at the chest is fixed and visible, so choose for the bust and the shoulder rather than the waist. A wool twill has body and holds the line it is cut into, so the dress keeps its shape through a long evening rather than relaxing into the body. The back slit is what makes the length walkable. The cotton lining does not slide the way an acetate does, which is more comfortable and slightly less forgiving over a fitted skirt.

Styling

Under the Short Mac Coat for the pairing that makes both garments stranger. Under the Short Gap Coat for the one that makes both quieter. With the Zip Shopper.

Care

This is a dry-clean dress and there is no argument on the other side: a wool twill with a cotton lining will shrink at two different rates in water. Between wearings, air it overnight and brush it rather than cleaning it. Never press the raw edges at the neck and hem with a hot dry iron. Our care guidance covers the rest.
