Comme des Garçon Junya Watanabe Wool Twill Skirt

Twill is a weave in which the weft crosses more than one warp thread and steps over by one on each pass, and the result of that small structural rule is the diagonal line that runs across every twill cloth ever made. It has consequences beyond the look. A twill drapes more readily than a plain weave of the same weight, because the longer floats let the cloth bend more easily, and it resists creasing for the same reason. It also holds soil less visibly and wears longer, which is why twill has been the weave of working cloth for centuries. In pure wool and in black, all of that becomes a skirt with a surface that shifts as the light moves and a fall that a plain-woven wool of identical weight would not have. What we hold for this skirt is a composition, an origin, and a color, and nothing else, so what is described here is the cloth. Made in Japan.

Why we selected it

A black wool skirt is a thing anybody can sell. This one is worth the difference because of the weave, which is the part of a garment most stockists never mention and the part a wearer feels immediately.

Junya Watanabe designs under his own name inside Comme des Garçons, and this is him at his least demonstrative.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent wool, in a twill weave. Made in Japan. Color: Black. We hold no length, no shape, and no fastening for this skirt. Please ask us and we will look at it with you.

Fit notes

We do not hold a cut description, so we will not tell you how it sits. What the cloth does is knowable: wool twill has drape and recovery, so it falls rather than standing and it comes back from creasing overnight. Wool relaxes slightly across a day at the waist.

Care

Wool governs. Have it cleaned rather than washed, press through a cloth and on the reverse to avoid shining the twill face, and store it clean, because moths find a wool skirt as readily as a wool coat. Our care guidance covers the rest.
