We hold almost nothing on this shirt. We can tell you only a composition, a country, a color, and the word cutout in its name, and we would rather say that than write a paragraph out of nothing. What we can tell you is what the construction implies. A cutout is a removal rather than an addition, so the shirt is defined by an absence, and an absence has to be placed with more care than a detail does: it changes how the garment sits on the body, it decides what can be worn underneath, and it cannot be undone by a wearer who changes their mind. Polyester is a sensible cloth for it, because a polyester knit or weave does not fray at a cut edge the way a natural fiber does. Black, made in Japan.

Why we selected it

The cutout is the oldest move this house has, older than most of the people now doing it, and this is a plain black version of it.

Comme des Garçons has been cutting holes in finished garments since the early 1980s, and it is one of the few houses for which the gesture is native rather than borrowed.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent polyester. Made in Japan. Color: Black. We hold no description of where the cutouts are, how many there are, or how they are finished, and we are not going to invent them. Please ask us and we will look at the shirt with you.

Fit notes

We do not hold a fit description for this shirt. Polyester does not stretch or relax, so whatever the cut is, it will stay as cut. A cutout garment is worth trying on rather than sizing from a chart, because the position of an opening matters more than the measurement around it.

Styling

Depends entirely on where the cutouts fall, which we cannot tell you from a distance. If they are placed so that something shows through, the Homme LS Button-Up underneath is the plainest answer.

Care

Wash cool and never hot, and press cool through a cloth if at all, because a hot iron glazes polyester permanently. A cut edge is the first thing to fail on any garment, so handle the openings gently and do not tumble it. Our care guidance covers the rest.
