Double pleating crossed in two directions gives cloth the appearance of hatched shading, and a skirt is where that reads most clearly, because a skirt is a large uninterrupted panel that moves as one. In black the effect is subtle and worth looking for: the crossed pleats catch light unevenly, so the surface has areas that appear deeper and areas that appear lifted, from a garment dyed a single colour. Two practical decisions keep it wearable. There are side pockets, which pleated skirts frequently do without, and there is a rear vent, which is what allows a pleated midi to be walked in properly rather than taken in short steps.

Materials and construction
100% polyester, made in Japan, in black. Double pleated, with side pockets and a rear vent.
Fit notes
Midi length. Pleated cloth carries much more material than its flat state suggests and opens in wearing, so it is roomier in motion than it appears at rest. The vent means the stride is not restricted.
Styling
Black and textured, it takes almost anything above it. Against the Square Rib AP Tunic it becomes texture on texture, which works because the two are at completely different scales.
Care
The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so it washes without losing them. Miyake’s own instruction is to wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never to tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean, since the pleats are not heat-resistant.
