Issey Miyake Two as One Shirt

Fifty-eight percent cupro and forty-two percent paper is an unusual cloth by any measure. Cupro is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from cotton linter, and it behaves very much like silk: cool to the touch, fluid, with a soft lustre. Paper contributes the opposite, a dry crispness and a willingness to hold a fold. Together they produce a fabric that drapes and yet keeps an edge, and this shirt is built to demonstrate exactly that combination. The construction is close to nothing: sleeveless, a high neckline, and one dart in the back. That single dart is the only shaping in the garment, and it is enough, because the cloth has sufficient body to take a line from one seam and hold it. A softer fabric would need three or four darts to achieve the same drape, and would lose its cleanness in the process. It is named Two as One because it was designed alongside the trousers, and the two share the cloth.

Why we selected it

A cupro and paper cloth is genuinely rare, and this is the garment that shows what the blend can do: fluid where you want fluidity and crisp where you want an edge, out of a single fabric. Achieving a drape like this from one dart is the kind of restraint we look for.

Drawing on Japanese paper traditions and treating an unfamiliar fibre as ordinary is a long-running Issey Miyake habit, and this cloth is one of its better results.

Materials and construction

58% cupro and 42% paper, made in Japan, in black. Sleeveless, with a high neckline and a single dart at the back.

Fit notes

Sleeveless with a high neck. The cloth has body, so it stands slightly away from the body rather than clinging, and the back dart is what creates the drape. It reads as clean and slightly architectural rather than as soft.

Styling

Worn with the Two as One Pants it becomes a complete look in one cloth, which is how the pair was conceived. On its own the high neck and bare shoulder make it a straightforwardly elegant top, and it wants nothing fussy beside it.

Care
