Issey Miyake Compound Pleats Shirt

A compound pleat is a pleat made of pleats: a small fold repeated inside a larger one, so the cloth carries two scales of structure at once. At a distance the surface reads as a single even texture. Close up it resolves into something considerably more complex, and the shadow it holds is deeper than a simple pleat can produce because there is more geometry for light to get lost in. Cream is a demanding colour for this, since a pale shows every irregularity, and it is the right choice for exactly that reason: the whole point is the depth of the surface, and pale cloth is where depth is most visible.

Why we selected it

Two scales of pleating in one cloth is a real escalation of a technique the house had already perfected, and the cream is what makes it readable rather than merely present.

Pleating is the Issey Miyake signature, and compound pleating is what it looks like when the studio compounds its own idea.

100% polyester, made in Japan, in cream. Compound pleats, creating texture at two scales.

Fit notes

Pleated cloth holds far more material than the flat garment implies and opens out in wearing, so expect generosity. The compound structure adds a little more body than a simple pleat, so it stands slightly further off the shoulder.

Styling

Cream against a dark bottom half gives the texture maximum contrast. Keep everything else plain; compound pleating does not share a silhouette gracefully.

Care

The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and permanent, so it washes without losing them. Miyake’s own instruction is to wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never to tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean, since the pleats are not heat-resistant.
