3Sixteen BDU Jacket – Black Back Satin

The battle dress uniform is one of the few garments in modern clothing designed by committee and made better by it. Decades of army revision produced a jacket with pockets where a person actually needs pockets, a front placket that keeps its buttons out of the weather, and a cut that accepts a layer underneath without pretending to be a coat. Nothing about that drafting has aged, which is why it keeps being redrawn. 3Sixteen has kept the pattern and changed the cloth.

Back satin is the choice worth understanding. It is a cotton woven so that the dense, smooth satin face sits against the wearer and the quieter side turns out, which is the old military convention and the reason a fatigue jacket wears the way it does: soft against a shirt, matte in daylight, and slow to look new again once it has taken a crease. There is a light nep through this one, small knots of fibre deliberately left in the yarn, so the black is not a flat black. It will go grey at the cuffs, the pocket mouths, and along the placket before it goes anywhere else. If you are buying black outerwear that is meant to stay black, this is the wrong jacket. That is the argument for it.

Why we selected it

We wanted one field jacket in the store that a customer could wear for ten years and not have to explain. This is it. Most black outerwear is designed to resist change, and this is designed to record it, which is the same conviction that runs through the denim two racks over. It is also the most useful thing 3Sixteen makes in a climate like ours, where a heavy cotton jacket over a flannel handles eight months of the year and a real coat handles the other four.

3Sixteen works almost entirely from military and workwear patterns, and the BDU is the most literal of those translations in the line.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton back satin, made in India. Button-through front with a concealed placket, four front pockets, and 3Sixteen’s replica BDU buttons.

Fit notes

Cut as a field jacket rather than a shirt, so there is room for a flannel or a crewneck underneath without the shoulders binding. It layers under a topcoat in deep winter, which is what the original was for. Heavyweight cotton of this kind starts firm and softens considerably over the first season, and it will hold a wrinkle from day one; that is the fabric behaving correctly, not a fault. If you intend to wear knitwear under it all winter, take the size that clears a sweater rather than the one that fits over a tee.

Styling

Over the Crosscut Flannel with raw denim, which is the house’s own sentence and hard to improve on. Over a knit polo in the shoulder seasons. Under a topcoat when it turns. Black cotton against indigo is one of the few colour pairings that never needs thinking about.

Care

Machine wash cool, inside out, and hang to dry. Heat is what sets a crease permanently and dulls black cotton, so keep it out of a hot dryer and let the fading happen through wear rather than through laundry. Our general care guidance covers the rest.
