3Sixteen CS-100xk Classic Straight- Rinsed Indigo Kibata

Kibata denim is woven slowly and at low tension, which is a decision that costs a mill time and gains it nothing except character. Loosening the tension on the loom lets the yarns sit less compressed against one another, and the cloth comes off with a rough, almost fuzzy surface and a visible irregularity that a tightly woven denim will never have. That texture is not decoration. It is what determines how the fabric abrades, and therefore how it fades, which is why this cloth is prized by people who care about the second year of a jean more than the first.

What separates this jean from its raw sibling is a single step at the end. After the jean is sewn it is given one rinse. The rinse takes the shrinkage out, settles the fabric, and pulls the texture forward, and it leaves the indigo essentially untouched. So the jean you try on is the size you keep, and the fading is all still ahead of you. This is not a washed jean pretending to be raw and it is not a raw jean sold as finished. It is the third position, and for most people it is the more sensible one.

Why we selected it

We brought this in for the customer who wants the CS-100x and does not want to spend a winter breaking one in. The honest truth is that the raw jean asks something of a wearer that not everybody has time for, and pretending otherwise sells people a garment they leave in a drawer. This gives you the same fabric, the same cut, and nearly the same eventual fade for a small trade in contrast. When someone tells us they want good denim but they want to wear it on Friday, this is the pair we hand them.

3Sixteen builds its line outward from the 100x fabric, custom woven for it by Kuroki Mills in Okayama, and the kibata is the same cloth read a different way.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton in 3Sixteen’s low-tension woven indigo kibata selvedge, cut and sewn in the United States, and rinsed as a finished garment. Five-pocket layout, selvedge denim woven on narrow shuttle looms that finish their own edge, which is the clean banded seam inside the hem.

Fit notes

Classic Straight is the least mannered cut 3Sixteen makes: straight from the knee down, no taper doing work at the ankle. Because the jean has already been rinsed, the fit is close to final on the day you buy it, so take the waist that is comfortable now rather than the one you are sizing for shrinkage. Denim relaxes across a wearing and comes back with a wash, but there is no dramatic first-wash transformation waiting here. That predictability is a large part of the point.

Styling

The same jean the whole store is built around, so it goes under everything: the flannel, the BDU, the work blazer. Rinsed indigo reads slightly darker and flatter than a raw jean in its first months, which makes it the easier of the two to wear under tailoring.

Care

This is not a raw jean and should not be treated like one, which is the most useful thing we can tell you about it. Wash it when it needs washing, cold and inside out, and hang it to dry away from direct heat. No months-long abstention, no freezer folklore, and no soak before first wear; the mill and the rinse have already done that work. Washing it less often will still give you higher contrast fading if that is what you are after, but this jean will not punish you for using a machine. Our general care guidance covers the rest.
