3Sixteen Mechanic’s Shirt

The two garments this shirt is drawn from could not be further apart in register. A mechanic's shirt is a uniform: two chest pockets, a plain placket, a roomy body, cut in a hard cotton twill to be worn in a workshop and to survive being worn there. An oxford button-down is a sports shirt that talked its way into formality, and the buttons at the collar points exist because polo players needed their collars to stay down. Nothing about the two belongs together, which is precisely the reason to put them together.

The cloth is what makes the joke land. Fifty-two percent linen and forty-eight percent viscose is nothing like the twill either original was cut from. Linen gives dryness and an irregular, slubbed surface; viscose is a regenerated cellulosic that adds weight and fall, so the shirt hangs from the shoulder instead of standing away from it. What you end up with is a work shirt shape in a cloth with drape, which is a much more adult garment than either reference on its own, and which is why it can be worn out in the evening without looking like a costume. Midnight is a very dark blue, deep enough to do most of the work of black and warm enough not to go flat.

The gap between a tee and a proper shirt is where most men's wardrobes fail, and this sits in it. It is lightweight enough for a hot evening, dark enough to be worn to something, and shaped loosely enough that it does not need tucking in. There is very little else we would put on ourselves as readily.

Cut roomy through the body in the manner of the work shirt it comes from, and meant to be worn untucked. A linen and viscose blend has drape rather than structure, so it follows the frame rather than holding away from it, and it relaxes across a day and recovers less than cotton would. Take your usual size; sizing up will read as oversized rather than as relaxed.

With raw denim and a low shoe, which is the whole point of a dark shirt in a light cloth. With the Service Pant in Steel for something quieter. Under the Work Blazer in tobacco, where a very dark blue against a warm brown is one of the better things in men's dressing.

Wash cool and hang to dry. Viscose is at its weakest when wet, so do not wring it and do not let it sit heavy in a machine; linen wants no heat at all. Press damp on a low iron if you press it.
