Canvas is a plain weave, which means it has no diagonal to it and no surface interest at all, and that is precisely what recommends it in a trouser. A twill drapes and a canvas holds. Cotton canvas of any weight keeps a leg line, resists abrasion far better than a chino, and softens without collapsing, so a canvas trouser tends to look the same at year five as it did at year one apart from being more comfortable.
Steel is the right grey for it: cool, mid-toned, and without the blue that makes most grey trousers difficult next to denim. There is nothing else to say about this garment, which is the compliment.
Why we selected it
Every wardrobe needs a trouser that is not denim, not tailored, and not military, and there is surprisingly little in that space made well. This is our answer to it.
The Service Pant is the plainest trouser 3Sixteen makes, and the one that shows the drafting most clearly because there is nothing else going on.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton canvas, made in India. Straight leg. Colour: Steel.
Fit notes
Straight through the leg with a clean line to the hem. Canvas has very little give when new and softens substantially over the first months without stretching out, so buy the waist that fits rather than the one you can break in. It holds a crease if you press it and looks entirely correct if you do not.
Styling
With the Knit Polo and a low shoe, which is about as simple as dressing gets. Under the French Work Jacket. With the alpaca crewneck in Oak, brown over grey.
Care
Machine wash cool and hang to dry. Canvas takes a long time to dry and does not need heat to do it; a hot dryer is the only reliable way to shrink and stiffen this fabric. Our fabric care guidance covers the rest.
Related pieces
The trousers either side of it are the Work Pant, wider and heavier, and the Cargo Pant and the Fatigue Pant, which carry the military drafting. Above the waist, the Knit Polo is the plain thing to put above it. Everything we currently hold from 3Sixteen is listed together.
