Ann Demeulemeester Heimo Pointy Ankle Boots

The western boot is one of the few shoe shapes with a genuinely functional origin, and every element of it exists for a reason that has nothing to do with how it looks. The pointed toe was drafted to find a stirrup without looking down. The shaft was cut to protect the calf. The pull-on construction existed because a boot that laces is a boot you cannot get out of quickly. Borrowing that shape and cutting it at the ankle removes the protection, keeps the point, and leaves you with the drawing rather than the tool.

The side zip is where this house’s hand shows. A true western boot has no fastening at all, and adding one is normally a concession that softens the shape. Here it does the opposite: with a zip doing the work, the shaft can be cut close to the ankle instead of loose enough to pull over a heel, so the boot holds the leg where a pull-on has to gap. Calf leather rather than cow keeps the grain fine and even, which matters on a shoe whose whole subject is a line.

Santa Fe has opinions about western boots. This is not one of them, and that is precisely why it works here.

Why we selected it

A pointed ankle boot is the most useful shoe a wardrobe can have and the one most often bought badly, because the point is usually either timid or a caricature. This one commits without tipping over, and the side zip means it fits at the ankle rather than around it. That is the whole argument, and it is a practical one.

The label was founded by Ann Demeulemeester in 1985 and has been designed by Stefano Gallici since 2023. Boots have carried this house’s silhouette for as long as it has existed.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent calf leather, made in Italy, in black. Ankle height with a pointed toe and a side zip closure.

Fit notes

A pointed toe adds visual length beyond the foot inside it, so these read longer than they measure and the point is empty rather than occupied. Size for the width across the ball of the foot rather than for the toe. Calf leather relaxes across the width with wear and does not lengthen, so a boot that is short will stay short. The side zip means the fit at the ankle is fixed rather than adjustable.

Styling

Under the Treze Bootcut Trousers, where the flare falls over the shaft and only the point shows. With a dress and a bare leg, which is the version where the shape does the most work. With a slim trouser cropped above the ankle if you want the whole boot visible.

Care

Leather wants brushing more than it wants product, and a pointed toe takes its scuffs at the tip, where they show most and where polish only fills them temporarily.
