Ann Demeulemeester Hilla Ankle Boot

A plain boot has nowhere to hide. Take away the hardware, the lacing, and the stitching that usually carries a design, and what is left is the last, the leather, and the line from ankle to toe. Those are the things that separate a good boot from an expensive one, and they are the things a photograph does not show. This is the pair in the range that asks to be judged on those terms. Calf leather is the right choice for it, being finer and more even in grain than cow hide, which matters more on a shoe with no detail to distract from the surface.

Why we selected it

Every wardrobe has more use for a plain black boot than for an interesting one. We carry the interesting one as well, and we would rather the customer chose deliberately between them than defaulted.

The label was founded by Ann Demeulemeester in 1985 and has been designed by Stefano Gallici since 2023.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent calf leather.

Fit notes

Ankle length on a flat or near-flat sole. Calf leather relaxes across the width with wear and does not lengthen, so size for length first.

Styling

Under anything. This is the pair that does not require the rest of the outfit to accommodate it.

Care
