Every shirt is assembled from something like a dozen separate pattern pieces, and on almost every shirt ever made those pieces are cut from one cloth so that the seams disappear and the garment reads as a single object. A combo shirt is the same pattern with that convention removed. Cut the yoke from one fabric, the body from another, a sleeve or a pocket from a third, and the construction stops hiding. You can see, from across a room, exactly how a shirt is put together.

Three quarters cotton with a quarter polyester is a working choice rather than a compromise. The polyester supplies recovery, which is what keeps a panelled garment from pulling out of true where cloths of slightly different weights meet at a seam.

Why we selected it

Patchwork is nearly always decoration applied on top of a garment. Here it is the garment’s own construction made visible, which is a different idea and a much better one.

Building a shirt from panels of unlike cloth is a recurring method in Engineered Garments’ collections rather than a one-season novelty.

Materials and construction

Seventy-five percent cotton, twenty-five percent polyester, with embroidery. Made in the USA. Colour: White and blue.

Fit notes

A short collar is cut with shorter points than a standard shirt collar, so it stands closer to the neck, reads smaller, and takes up less room under a jacket. We hold no further fit information for this shirt. A blend with a quarter polyester in it has good recovery and will not relax across a day the way a pure cotton does.

Styling

With the RF Trousers. With the Painter Pant in olive. Under the Trucker Jacket, where a plain khaki holds the panelling down.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. Polyester glazes under heat, so press low and through a cloth if at all, and press a panelled seam from the back so the join stays flat. Our care guidance for mixed cloths covers the rest.
