Grace Ling Tailored Wide Leg Logo Tag Trousers

Wide and tailored are close to opposites. Tailoring is the practice of building shape into flat cloth with darts, seams, and pressing, and it reaches its clearest expression in a narrow leg, where every one of those decisions is visible. Widen the leg and most of them stop showing. What is left is the hang, which is to say the cloth: how heavy it is, how it falls from the hip, whether it breaks or drops straight. That is why a wide trouser is a wool trouser more often than it is anything else. Wool has weight without stiffness and it takes a press, so it will fall from a fixed waist in a single line rather than collapsing at the knee. Black removes the last distraction, which on a garment whose only subject is its own line is the point.

A wide wool trouser is the most useful thing a wardrobe of difficult clothes can have in it, because it will carry almost anything above it. We wanted the tailored version rather than the soft one.

Tailored means a fixed waist, so size for the waist and let the leg supply the rest. A wool of any real weight lengthens slightly with wearing and then settles. The hem is wide by definition, which means the shoe underneath it matters more than it usually would.

Wool asks to be aired and brushed far more often than it asks to be cleaned, and a tailored trouser in particular loses its press every time it goes through a machine. Hang it from the waistband, let it rest a day between wearings, and take it to a cleaner rather than to a washing machine.
