Pleated shorts are a better idea than they sound. The heat-set pleat gives a short a vertical line that ordinary summer shorts never have, so instead of reading as a flat panel of cloth cut off above the knee, the leg has direction and falls rather than sitting. That matters more on a short than on a trouser, because there is less garment to establish a shape and the eye goes straight to the hem. Black, in a cloth that will not crease no matter what you do to it, means these behave like the easiest thing in the wardrobe while looking like a deliberate one. They are the summer counterpart to the trousers in the line, built on exactly the same logic.
Why we selected it
A short with a genuine vertical line is unusual, and the cloth means it survives heat, packing, and sitting without any of it showing.
Materials and construction
100% polyester, made in Japan, in black. Drawstring waist with side pockets.
Fit notes
The drawstring waist means it sits where you set it. Pleated cloth opens as it is worn. Side pockets are set so the pleating runs past them cleanly.
Styling
A drawstring waist and a pleated leg make these about as easy as a summer garment gets while still looking considered. Plain top, any colour.
Care
The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so they wash without losing them. Wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean. Store rolled along the direction of the pleats.
