Issey Miyake Pleats Please Basics Sleeveless Top

Sleeveless changes what a plain pleated top is for. With sleeves it is a garment; without them it is a foundation, the thing the cardigan and the jacket go over. The vertical pleating still does its work, holding narrow bands of light down the body, but the bare shoulder means the top reads as structure rather than as surface. Grey is the correct colour for something intended to disappear underneath other things and to hold its own when it does not.

Why we selected it

It is the layer the rest of the line is built on top of, and it works perfectly well alone.

Materials and construction

100% polyester, made in Japan, in grey. Vertical pleats, mock neck, slim fit, sleeveless.

Fit notes

Slim, with a mock neck. Pleated cloth opens out in wearing, so it is more forgiving than the flat garment appears.

Care

The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so it washes without losing them. Wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean. Store it rolled along the direction of the pleats.
