A wide leg without a crease is volume. A wide leg with one is a shape. The sharp centre crease running down each leg here is what organises the width: it gives the eye a vertical to follow and splits the front of the leg into two planes that catch light differently, so the trouser reads as architectural rather than simply full. The heavier cloth is what makes that crease possible in a pleated garment, since a lighter fabric would let it soften and disappear into the surrounding pleating. Elastic at the waist and two side pockets keep the whole thing practical, which is the line’s usual bargain: the silhouette is considered and the wearing is easy.
Why we selected it
The crease is the entire difference between this and an ordinary wide pleated trouser, and it takes a heavier cloth to hold one.
Achieving a tailored line without any tailoring is a long-standing Issey Miyake pursuit, and this trouser gets there with a crease and nothing else.
Materials and construction
100% polyester, made in Japan, in black. Heavier pleated cloth, wide leg, sharp centre creases, elastic waist, two side pockets.
Fit notes
Wide through the leg with an elastic waist. Pleated cloth opens out in wearing, so it is fuller in motion than at rest. The crease holds its line as you walk, which is the point of the heavier fabric.
Styling
Volume below wants something close above. The crease reads best when the hem is allowed to sit cleanly over a shoe with some structure.
Care
The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so it washes without losing them. Wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean. Store it rolled along the direction of the pleats.
