Lavenham Denham Jacket

Quilting is a structural decision before it is a decorative one. Wadding held between two faces will migrate, bunch, and settle into the hem within a season unless the stitch pattern stops it, and the stitch pattern is the only thing that can. Lavenham’s answer is a two-inch diamond, a cell small enough to hold the fill in place across a body and large enough that the jacket does not read as a mattress. Everything else about this jacket sits on that grid.

Both faces are Lavenster, Lavenham’s own recycled polyester, so the outer and the lining are the same cloth and there is no hand-off between a shell and a liner. The cut is a relaxed reading of the house’s Raydon, which is the tailored original: more room through the body, without giving up the line at the shoulder. The details are a working garment’s rather than a design’s. Two patch pockets, an internal chest pocket, press studs rather than a zip, organic cotton corduroy binding at the edges and the collar where the wear happens, and back vents that survive from the jacket’s first job, which was to be worn on a horse. Why we selected it

Quilted outerwear is a category where the name on the label and the hands on the machine are usually different people. This one is quilted, cut, and sewn under a single roof in Suffolk by the company whose name is on it, which is most of the reason we have it.

Lavenham began by quilting horse rugs and came to jackets afterward, which is why the quilt on one of its garments is doing a job rather than performing one.

Materials and construction

Outer: one hundred percent recycled Lavenster polyester. Lining: one hundred percent Lavenster polyester. Wadding: polyester, partly recycled. A two-inch diamond quilt throughout, organic cotton corduroy binding at the edges and the collar, two patch pockets, one internal chest pocket, back vents, and a press stud fastening. Fit notes

Sized on a numeric chest run rather than on small, medium, and large. The cut has more room through the body than the house’s tailored original while keeping the shoulder line, so it takes a knit under it without pulling at the press studs and it does not stand away from the body when it is worn open. Quilted outerwear does not drape; it holds the shape it was cut in. That makes the size you want the one that closes comfortably over what you actually wear underneath rather than the one that closes at all, and the back vents are what let it sit down properly once it does.

Styling

Over a knit and under nothing. A plain black quilted jacket is the layer that goes on last, and this one is cut to be worn open as often as closed, which is the argument for what goes under it mattering. The Blackwatch Mickfield Gilet is the alternative rather than the layer, since the house builds the Mickfield to be worn in place of a jacket rather than beneath one.

Care

Everything on this jacket except the corduroy binding is polyester, and polyester’s one real enemy is heat. Wash it cool on a gentle cycle, do not tumble it warm, and keep an iron off it entirely, because a quilted synthetic face will glaze and a glaze does not come back. Air dry it on a hanger and let the wadding settle before you wear it. Our care guidance covers the rest.
