Beige is a difficult color to buy and an easy one to get wrong, because it sits close to a dozen neighbors that are not it: sand, stone, khaki, oatmeal, bone. What separates a good beige trouser from a poor one is whether the color reads as a decision or as an absence of one, and that comes down almost entirely to the cloth, since a flat cotton in beige goes dead and a cotton with any texture in it does not. This trouser is one hundred percent cotton, made in Japan, in beige. That is what we hold about it, and rather than dress the paragraph up we would rather tell you plainly that the rest is a conversation.
Why we selected it
A plain beige cotton trouser is the piece that quietly makes half a wardrobe work, and it is worth having one that is properly made rather than one that is merely available.
Officer’s clothing is one of the recurring sources in Cabourn’s archive, and this is the trouser it produces.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton. Made in Japan. Color: Beige. We do not hold a cut, a rise, a pocket description, or a fastening for this trouser, and none is described above. Please ask us and someone will look at it with you.
Fit notes
Sizing runs 34, 36, and 38 on a waist scale. Cotton of an unstated weight can behave very differently at the knee across a day, and we cannot tell you which this does, which is a fair question to ask before you choose. It will shrink once on a hot wash and then stop.
Styling
With the Open Collar Shirt in ivory for the palest combination in the house’s work, or the Fishermans Shirt when the outfit needs a pattern. Under the Fireman Jacket, where indigo against beige is the version we would argue for.
Care
Cool wash, gentle cycle, dry flat or on a line rather than hot. Heat is what shrinks a cotton trouser and it only gets one chance. Our care guidance covers cotton in more detail.
