3Sixteen Work Pant

Garment dyeing means the trouser is sewn first and dyed afterwards, in the finished state, which is the opposite of the usual order and produces a different object. Dye reaches the seams, the thread, and the folds unevenly, so the colour has depth and slight variation built into it rather than sitting flat across a length of yardage, and the garment comes out of the process already shrunk and already relaxed. Rinsing after that softens it further. The trouser you buy is the trouser you will have.

Underneath the finish, the construction is proper workwear. The twill is heavyweight and pronounced enough to see, structured but with enough weight to drape rather than stand. The seams are double-needle flat-felled throughout, which is the strongest way to join two pieces of cloth and the reason work trousers of this kind outlive the people who buy them. The rise is high and the leg is wide, as it should be.

Why we selected it

This is the trouser for a customer who wants the shape and the weight of workwear without the military reference that runs through the rest of this line. Tobacco is the other reason. It is a difficult colour to buy and almost nobody makes a wide-leg trouser in it.

3Sixteen’s Portuguese-made pieces sit slightly apart from the rest of the line, and the Work Pant is the trouser side of that.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton chino twill, heavyweight, garment dyed and rinsed. Double-needle flat-felled seams. Made in Portugal. Colour: tobacco.

Fit notes

High rise and a wide, straight leg to a generous opening. It sits at the natural waist and it is meant to look full through the leg; taking it in defeats the pattern. Because it is dyed and rinsed as a finished garment there is essentially no shrinkage left in it, so buy the waist that fits today. It takes a boot easily and a low shoe well.

Styling

With the Work Blazer in tobacco for a soft matched suit, which is a genuinely good idea and one very few people will attempt. With the black tee and a boot, which needs no thought. Under the French Work Jacket, brown against indigo.

Care

Machine wash cool and hang to dry. A garment-dyed cotton will release a little colour in the first few washes and then settle, so keep it away from pale laundry at the start. Our fabric care guidance covers the rest.
