4S Designs Utility Shirt

Fifty-two percent cotton and forty-eight percent virgin wool is an almost even split, and an even split is a decision rather than a compromise. Cotton gives a shirt its handle and its willingness to be worn against skin. Wool at nearly half gives it warmth, recovery, and a certain dryness in the drape that pure cotton plaid never has, so the cloth hangs like a light jacket rather than lying like a shirt. Then there is the collar, which is one hundred percent leather in silver, and it changes the object entirely. A leather collar is heavier than the cloth it is attached to, so it sits down rather than standing up, and it holds whatever shape you put it in instead of springing back. It also fixes the garment’s register: this is not a shirt you put in a machine on a Sunday, and the collar is the part that decides that. The purple plaid underneath is doing the loudest work and the collar is doing the most.
Why we selected it
A shirt in a wool blend heavy enough to work as a layer, with a contrast collar in a different material entirely, is a hard thing to find made seriously. Most attempts at it are a trim, not a collar.
Putting a second material where a garment’s function lives, rather than where it will photograph, is this house’s recurring move, and the collar here is the plainest example of it.
Materials and construction
Fifty-two percent cotton and forty-eight percent virgin wool, woven as a plaid, with a contrasting collar in one hundred percent leather. Made in Italy. Color: purple plaid, with the collar in silver.
Fit notes
Sized Medium and Large. A near-even wool blend has more body than a shirting cotton, so it holds away from the body rather than following it, and it layers over a knit more happily than it layers under a jacket. The leather collar has no give in it and will soften with wearing rather than with washing.
Styling
Over the Long Sleeve Woven Polo or the Knit BD Shirt Animal. With the Mil Pant or the 5 Pocket Denim Black, where a plain trouser lets the plaid and the collar be the only two things happening. Worn open over a plain layer is the version that makes the collar legible.
Care
Do not wash this. The cloth and the collar want different things and the collar wins: leather should not be soaked, and a near-even wool blend should not be agitated or heated. Clean it professionally and tell the cleaner about the collar. Our care guidance covers the rest.
