Camiel Fortgens 150% Pants

The cloth is the reason to look twice. Polyester at fifty-five percent with wool at forty-five is a blend chosen for behavior rather than for economy: polyester holds a texture permanently once it is set, and wool gives a cloth the weight and the recovery that a pure synthetic never has. Put together and crinkled, they produce a surface that stays crinkled, which a wool alone would slowly lose and a polyester alone would make cheap. The waistband is elasticated and its edge is left raw, so the most structured part of a trouser is also the least finished one. In black, all of that reads as texture rather than as pattern, which is what makes a strange trouser wearable on an ordinary day.

Why we selected it

Texture is the hardest thing to buy in a black trouser, because almost every black trouser is trying to be smooth. This one is not, and it stays that way.

Naming a garment for what it does to a proportion is a habit of this house, and the cloth on this one carries the idea further than the name does.

Materials and construction

Fifty-five percent polyester and forty-five percent wool, made in Ukraine. Elasticated waistband with a raw edge, and a crinkled texture through the cloth. Color: Black.

Fit notes

The waist is elasticated, so the size is choosing the leg. A crinkled cloth has give in it that the fiber content does not suggest, which means these accommodate more than a flat cloth of the same measurement would. The raw waistband edge softens with wear and does not unravel, because the elastic is doing the structural work behind it.

Styling

With the Big Tee LS. Under the Simple Jacket. With the Boxy Shirt untucked, which lets the texture read against a flat cotton.

Care

The wool governs, even though the polyester is the larger figure. Wash cool and gently or have them cleaned, and keep heat away from them entirely: a hot iron will flatten the crinkle out of the cloth and it will not come back, and heat is what damages wool fastest in any case.
