A nylon shirt is a deliberately odd object. Nylon is a filament fiber, so the cloth has a faint sheen and a dry, slippery hand, and it moves as one piece rather than breaking into the soft folds a cotton poplin makes. It also holds a shape: flap pockets on a nylon chest stay flat and square instead of softening into the body the way patch pockets on a cotton shirt do within a season. That rigidity is the point. This reads as a shirt built rather than sewn, and it stays looking the way it looked when it was made for far longer than a cotton equivalent will. Nylon has no give and does not relax, so a nylon shirt is sized on the shoulder and the chest and stays exactly there. It sits away from the body rather than following it, which reads cleaner and runs warmer than cotton in the same weather.
