Cortana Elena Dress

Viscose and linen is a blend that solves a specific problem, and the problem is that linen will not fall. Linen has almost no elasticity and a stiff fiber, so a linen dress holds itself away from the body and reads architectural whether or not you wanted it to. Viscose is a regenerated cellulosic, made from the same plant material by a different route, and it does what linen cannot: it hangs straight down and it moves after the body has stopped. At sixty-one percent it is the majority and it is setting the behavior, with the linen underneath it supplying enough dryness and enough texture that the cloth never goes slippery or shiny. The cut is built on that. Lean and long, close through the bodice, then released at the hip so that the fabric falls rather than being shaped. There is very little seaming doing the work, which is the whole intention. The olive green is muted without being grey, and warm without turning brown, which is a harder color to get right than a navy and a much harder one to wear badly.

Why we selected it

A long dress that skims rather than clings is a genuinely difficult thing to make, and most of them achieve it with a lining or with darts. This one achieves it with a fiber choice, which is why it still looks like one piece of cloth.

Cortana’s dresses are consistently built to release from the body rather than to hold it, and this is the plainest, longest version of that.

Materials and construction

Sixty-one percent viscose and thirty-nine percent linen. Cut lean and long, close through the bodice and released at the hip. Color: olive green. We do not hold a country of origin for this piece, and we describe no lining.

Fit notes

Close through the bodice, so choose for the shoulder and the bust rather than the waist. It skims from the hip down and does not need a body underneath it to work. Viscose has real weight when it hangs, so the length settles a little on the first wearing and stays where it lands.

Styling

With the Nora Cardigan for the cool half of the day, since linen knit against a viscose-linen weave is a texture difference rather than a fiber argument. With the Sack M Bag. It takes a flat sandal better than a heel, because the length is already doing the work.

Care

Viscose is the governing fiber and it is at its weakest when wet, so hand wash cool and briefly if you wash it at all, and dry flat rather than on a hanger. Shrinkage in a regenerated cellulosic does not come back. Our care guidance covers the rest.
