A self-tie at the waist is a small piece of engineering that solves the problem every vest has. A vest is worn over things, and the things change: a shirt in September, a shirt and a knit in November. A vest cut to fit the first is loose over the second and a vest cut for the second hangs off the first. A tie means the garment does not have to choose. Pull it and the waist comes in over a shirt; leave it and the vest sits square over a sweater. It is the same logic as the drawstring on a fatigue trouser, which is to say it is the logic of a garment made to be worked in rather than photographed.
Cotton twill is the plain and correct answer for the cloth. The diagonal weave gives it drape without sacrificing durability, it takes navy deeply, and it is unremarkable enough that the shape and the tie are the only things doing anything. That restraint is unusual in a line that will put a fatigue pattern in red and a sports coat in seersucker.
Why we selected it
The vest is the layer most people skip and the one that actually solves the temperature problem, because it warms the core and leaves the arms free. This one adjusts, which is the difference between a vest that gets worn and one that does not.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton twill, made in the USA. Button closure with a self-tie fastening at the waist. Colour: Navy.
Sizing and fit
Cut to go over a shirt or a knit, with the waist tie taking up the difference between the two. Cotton twill has a little give and softens over a season. Size for the layer you expect to wear underneath most often and let the tie handle the rest.
Styling
Over the Work Shirt in natural with the RF Trousers. Over the Rounded Collar Shirt with the FW24 Andover Pant, tie drawn in. Under the Bedford Jacket in black moleskin, where it becomes the middle layer it was drawn to be.
Care
Wash cool and hang to dry. Untie the waist before washing so the tie does not knot in the drum. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
Related pieces
The Hooded Field Vest is the heavier vest in the line. The Work Shirt in natural and the RF Trousers are what a vest is cut to go over, and the Bedford Jacket in black moleskin is what goes over the vest. Everything we carry from Engineered Garments is listed together.
