Engineered Garments Classic Shirt- Bird Print Lawn

Lawn is a cotton spun about as fine as cotton can reasonably be spun, then woven plain at a very high thread count. What comes off the loom is light, faintly sheer, and smooth enough to feel calendered even when it has not been. The name comes from Laon, in northern France, where it was made.

What matters about it on a printed shirt is that the surface is uninterrupted. There is no twill line, no slub, and no texture in the weave competing for attention, which is why lawn has been the ground for fine printed cotton for two hundred years. A motif this small and this specific would go muddy on a heavier cloth; on lawn it stays legible at arm’s length. The hem is cut square rather than into tails, which settles in advance the only real question about a printed shirt, which is whether it was meant to be tucked.

Why we selected it

Printed shirts usually fail on the cloth rather than on the print. This is the correct ground for a small motif, and a square hem means it was drawn to be worn out and not apologised for.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton lawn with a printed bird motif, made in the USA. Square-cut hem. Colour: Grey and multi.

Fit notes

Light and faintly sheer, with only the give a plain weave allows, which is very little. The square hem sits level all the way round, so the length reads the same at the side as at the front. A fine cotton softens quickly and creases readily.

Styling

With the Sailor Pant in olive. With the RF Trousers, worn out. Under the Loiter Jacket in olive nylon, where a single flat colour holds the print down.

Care

Wash cool and inside out, and hang to dry. A fine cotton is thin enough to snag, so keep it away from anything with hardware in the drum. Prints lose depth under heat and under strong sun, so dry it out of direct light and press low, from the back. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
