There are three ways to put a pattern on a shirt and they are not interchangeable. A print lies in the cloth, level with the surface, and goes wherever the ink goes. A woven figure is built into the structure on the loom and cannot be separated from it. Embroidery is the third and the only additive one: thread is stitched onto a cloth that is already finished, so the pattern stands proud of the ground and catches light at a different angle from the fabric underneath it.
On black, that difference is the entire effect. Black absorbs light, so the raised thread is very nearly the only thing on the shirt returning any, and the pattern arrives as relief before it arrives as colour. Cut loose and boxy, with two flap pockets on the chest, the shape is deliberately plain so that the surface has somewhere to happen.
Why we selected it
An embroidered shirt is usually a souvenir or a costume. This one is a plain workwear shape carrying the decoration, which is the only version of the idea that gets worn twice.
Engineered Garments cuts the same few shirt patterns season after season and changes the cloth, which is why a decorated shirt from this house still has a working shape underneath it.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton with floral embroidery, made in the USA. Loose, boxy cut with two flap pockets on the chest. Colour: Black with floral embroidery.
Fit notes
Loose and boxy, which means it hangs away from the body rather than following it and takes no shaping at the waist. Size on the shoulder, since nothing below the shoulder is doing any fitting. Cotton relaxes across a day of wearing and recovers in the wash.
Styling
With the FW24 FA Pant in black, tonally, where the embroidery is the only event. With the Painter Pant in olive. Under the Bedford Jacket in black moleskin, open.
Care
Wash cool and inside out, and hang to dry. Do not run an iron across the embroidery: press from the back, on a towel, so the stitches sink into the pile rather than being flattened. Black cotton loses depth under heat and under sun, so keep it out of a hot dryer and off a line in full light. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
