Sixty-five percent polyester with thirty-five percent cotton is not a compromise cloth, it is a specification. It is the ratio armies settled on in the second half of the twentieth century when the requirement changed from "must be natural" to "must hold a crease through a week in the field and come out of a wash ready to wear." Polyester provides the memory, cotton provides the hand and the breathability, and 65/35 is where the two stop fighting. It is the reason a service trouser looks pressed at the end of a day when a pure cotton one does not.

The pattern here is an officer's rather than an enlisted one, and the tell is the pockets. Two flapped pockets at the back and a flapped watch pocket at the front are dress details, not field ones: a flap closes a pocket so nothing shows and nothing falls, which matters when you are standing still and being looked at rather than moving under a load. Cut wide through the leg, the whole thing sits in a register this house is unusually good at, which is a garment that is formal in its details and casual in its proportions.

A wide trouser that holds a line is hard to make, and a synthetic blend is genuinely the right tool for it rather than a cheaper substitute for wool. The flapped pockets are what keep the width from reading as sloppiness.

Wide through the leg from the hip down, so it falls in a straight column and does not follow the leg. A poly-cotton has less give than pure cotton but far better recovery, which means it will not bag at the knee across a day. It holds a press for a long time.

Wash cool and hang to dry. Polyester takes heat badly and will glaze under an iron, so press it low and through a cloth if at all, and keep it out of a hot dryer. It needs pressing far less often than a cotton does, which is most of the point. Our care guidance for mixed cloths covers the rest.
