Engineered Garments Work Shirt SS24

Seersucker happens on the loom. Two sets of warp threads are held at different tensions, the slack set buckles into permanent puckered stripes, and the taut set stays flat, so only part of the cloth ever touches the wearer. Air moves through the gaps, and a fabric already crumpled by design cannot be creased. Cotton does the other half of the work, taking up moisture off the skin instead of holding it at the surface. Cut on the Work Shirt pattern and left white, it is the plainest hot-weather shirt this house draws: no colour to consider, no print to place, and a surface doing everything by standing away from the body.

Why we selected it

The white summer shirt is the hardest simple thing to get right, and the cloth is the only place to get it right. Seersucker answers the heat and the creasing in one move.

The Work Shirt has been in Engineered Garments’ line since the house’s second season, and it has been re-cut in a different cloth almost every season since.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, woven as a seersucker, and cut on the Work Shirt pattern. Colour: White.

Fit notes

Relaxed through the body, as the Work Shirt pattern is. Seersucker has a little natural give from the pucker, so it moves more easily than a flat cloth of the same weight, and it will read rumpled within an hour of putting it on. That is the cloth working rather than the shirt failing.

Styling

With the Sailor Pant in linen and cotton. With the RF Trousers. Under the Andover Jacket in beige seersucker, which is the most committed reading available and the correct one.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. Do not iron it: pressing a seersucker flattens the pucker and throws away the only reason to own it. Washing is what a white cotton wants, so wash it freely and dry it in daylight rather than reaching for bleach. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
