Engineered Garments Tibet Shirt

The chuba is the Tibetan wrap robe: a long garment crossed over the body and held with ties and a sash rather than fastened down the middle. What that produces, and what this shirt borrows, is a front with no centre seam in it. A conventional shirt is divided vertically by its placket, and the eye reads two halves either side of a line of buttons. Move the opening off to one side and the division disappears. The front becomes a single panel with a diagonal running across it, and the closure stops being the first thing anybody looks at.

The cloth is doing two things at once. A small plaid is a pattern drawn in the colour of the yarn, before weaving. Seersucker is a pucker built into the structure by running alternate warps at different tensions, during weaving. Put both together at a small scale and in olive, and the check reads as texture before it reads as pattern.

Why we selected it

A shirt that closes off-centre is one of the very few ways left to change the front of a shirt, and this one takes the idea from a garment that has been doing it for centuries rather than inventing it.

Quoting a specific garment from outside the American workwear canon is something Engineered Garments does far more often than the brand’s reputation suggests.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton in a small seersucker plaid, made in the USA. Asymmetric opening with a tie closure and a stand collar. Colour: Olive.

Fit notes

A stand collar sits directly on the neck with no leaf folded over it, so it reads higher and plainer than a conventional collar. The wrap front means the fit through the chest is set by where the ties are drawn rather than by a fixed button line, which gives it a range rather than a point. Seersucker has a little give from the pucker.

Styling

With the Sailor Pant in olive, tonally. With the Natural Cotton Heavy Fatigue Pant, where undyed cotton takes the olive down. Under the Loiter Jacket in olive nylon.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. Do not iron it: pressing flattens the pucker out of a seersucker and it does not come back. Olive is a compound dye and shifts under strong sun faster than a simple one, so dry it out of direct light. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
