Harris Wharf London Western Jacket

Boiling wool is a controlled shrink. The knitted or woven cloth is agitated in heat until the fibers felt into each other, and what comes out is denser, thicker, and structurally different from what went in: it will not fray, it will not unravel, and it holds a shape without anything inside it. That last property is the reason this jacket has no lining and needs none. Most tailored outerwear borrows its shoulder from an interlining, a canvas, or a fused front, and the cloth is only the surface you see. Here the cloth is the structure. It also means the inside of the jacket looks like the outside, which is either a small pleasure or nothing at all depending on the kind of person you are. In off-white it is a harder garment to make than it looks, because a pale boiled wool shows every inconsistency in the felting. The black buttons are the only interruption, and they are placed to be seen.

Why we selected it

This is the shortest possible route to understanding what this house actually does. A pale, unlined, boiled wool jacket either works or it does not, and there is nowhere for it to hide.

Harris Wharf London built its name on unlined outerwear in dense, pressed and felted wools, and this is that argument with the volume turned up rather than a variation on it.

One hundred percent wool, boiled, made in Italy. Unlined. Black buttons against an off-white ground. Color: Off-White.

We do not describe the cut of the front, the presence or absence of a vent, or what the buttons are made of. What we can tell you about this jacket is the cloth, the color, the country, and the lining that is not there, and we would rather stop at those four than fill the space with a fifth we are unsure of.

Fit notes

Boiled wool has body and very little drape, so it stands slightly away from you rather than following the line of the arm. It layers over a knit comfortably and under almost nothing, which is normal for the cloth rather than a limitation of this jacket. The absence of a lining means it does not slide over a sleeve the way a lined jacket does, so a smooth shirt or fine knit underneath is easier than a rough one.

Styling

Off-white outerwear wants to be the palest thing you are wearing or the only pale thing. Over black, it is the whole outfit. Over indigo, it reads softer. It sits well with a flat wool trouser and badly with anything shiny.

Care

Dry clean. Boiled wool should never be washed at home, because the process that made it is the same process that will keep going in a hot machine and the jacket will come back a size smaller and stiffer. Our general guidance on wool covers brushing, airing, and storage.
