Issey Miyake Campagne Pant

A centre crease is the oldest trick in trouser making and it usually depends on tailoring: canvas, a lining, a waistband that holds the whole thing in position. This one depends on the cloth instead. The blend is half cotton and just under half nylon, with a trace of polyurethane, and the result is a fabric with real body, thick enough that the crease running down each leg reads as a drawn line rather than a fold. The cut is cropped and wide, which on most trousers would mean softness and volume. Here it means the opposite: the leg falls in a column, the crease holds the front of that column vertical, and the eye follows it down. It is a formal effect produced without a single formal component.

Why we selected it

Trousers that look tailored and behave like sweatpants are rare, and most attempts at it lose the line within an hour of wearing. The cloth is what makes this one work.

The idea that structure should live in the material rather than in the construction is the through-line of Issey Miyake‘s work, and this is one of the plainest demonstrations of it.

Materials and construction

50% cotton, 47% nylon, and 3% polyurethane, made in Japan, in black. The nylon supplies the crispness that holds the crease and the cotton keeps the hand dry rather than slick. The small percentage of polyurethane gives the cloth its recovery, which is why the leg returns to its shape after sitting.

Fit notes

Cropped, and wide through the whole leg rather than tapering. It sits away from the body, so it reads as generous without reading as oversized. The crop means the hem lands where the shape of your shoe becomes part of the outfit, which is worth thinking about before choosing one.

Styling

The vertical line wants either something equally spare above it, a fine knit or a plain shirt, or something with real volume that lets the trouser be the disciplined half. A square-toed shoe or a substantial boot suits the crop better than anything delicate.

Care

A technical blend rather than a natural one, so keep heat away from it entirely and wash cool. The polyurethane in particular does not forgive a hot dryer. Our fabric care guide covers polyester, nylon, and technical cloth in more detail.
