The puffer is the least elegant garment in common circulation, and it is that way for a structural reason: the loft that makes it warm has to be held in place by quilted channels, and those channels segment the body into horizontal bands that swell outward. It is a shape defined by its compartments. What this coat does is keep the volume and refuse the segmentation. Instead of banding, the lines run soft and straight, so the coat holds its bulk within a clean vertical outline and reads as a shape rather than as a stack of inflated tubes. Hence Frame: the garment draws an edge around the wearer instead of expanding to fill space. Doing this in the line’s pleated polyester is the part worth noticing, because the pleating gives the surface its own fine vertical texture, and fine vertical texture on a large volume is exactly what keeps that volume looking intentional. It is one of very few puffers that could be described as restrained without that being a euphemism.
Why we selected it
Almost nobody makes a puffer that holds a straight line, because the construction fights it. This one does, and it manages to be genuinely warm outerwear that still looks composed.
Taking a garment defined by its construction and rebuilding it so the construction does not show is a recurring Issey Miyake project, and this coat is the outerwear version.
Materials and construction
100% polyester, made in the Philippines, in black. Cut with soft, straight lines.
Fit notes
It holds volume within a straight outline rather than expanding into bands, so it takes up less visual space than a conventional puffer of the same warmth. Read it as a shape. It goes over tailoring without distorting it.
Styling
Because it keeps a clean edge, it can go over things a puffer usually ruins, including a jacket. Black and unornamented, it does not compete with whatever is beneath.
Care
The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so it washes without losing them. Wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean. Store it rolled along the direction of the pleats. Our fabric care guide covers polyester and technical cloth.
