Issey Miyake Homme Plissé Kersey Peats Trousers

The whole proposition of this trouser is a substitution. Twill is a weave with a visible diagonal and a certain density, and it is what most formal trousers are made from; it also carries weight, which is why formal trousers hang the way they do and why they are uncomfortable in heat. This cloth is woven to resemble twill and to feel markedly lighter, so the trouser reads as a proper one and wears like almost nothing. Cutting it thin and straight commits to the illusion: a narrow leg is where a lightweight cloth would normally give itself away by collapsing, and this one holds its line. Ivory pushes it further still, since a pale narrow trouser is the least forgiving thing you can make.

Why we selected it

A trouser that looks like twill and weighs a fraction of it is genuinely useful, and the thin straight leg proves the cloth is doing what it claims.

Engineering a synthetic to take on the character of a traditional cloth is a persistent Issey Miyake interest, and the Kersey pieces are where Homme Plissé does it.

Materials and construction

100% polyester, made in Japan, in ivory. Woven to resemble twill at a much lighter weight, with a thin, straight leg.

Fit notes

Thin and straight through the leg. Pleated cloth opens as it is worn. The light weight means it moves more than a conventional twill trouser of the same cut.

Styling

Ivory and narrow reads formal, and it takes a darker top half well. With the matching jacket it becomes a full pale outfit, which is the most striking way to wear it.

Care

The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so it washes without losing them. Wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean. Store rolled along the direction of the pleats.
