Kuon Seersucker Single Pleat Pants

The pleat count on a trouser is a decision about where the volume goes. Two pleats put fullness through the whole thigh and read as a deliberately full trouser. None puts the entire fit onto the cut of the seat and leaves nothing in reserve. One pleat opens the front at the hip and closes again above the knee, which gives room exactly where sitting down needs it and nowhere else, and it is the reason a single-pleat trouser can be cut straight without becoming narrow. Seersucker makes the whole arrangement do more than it usually does. The pucker in the cloth means the fabric is already holding itself off the leg before the cut has done anything, so a straight leg in seersucker moves like a slightly fuller trouser in a flat cloth, and it does it without the volume.

Why we selected it

A summer trouser that is neither a chino nor a drawstring is a genuine gap. This is tailored in the cut and not in the cloth, which is the right way around for July.

This is the plainest of the shapes Kuon puts its seersucker into, and it is the one that carries the least reference in it.

Materials and construction

Sixty-nine percent polyester and thirty-one percent cotton, made in Japan. Seersucker. Straight leg, with a single pleat on each leg. Color: Navy.

Fit notes

Straight through the leg with the single pleat providing the ease at the hip, so choose for the waist and the seat rather than for the thigh. Seersucker has almost no give and no recovery, and it does not soften across a day the way a cotton twill does. What it does instead is stay off the skin, which is what you are buying.

With the Side Zip Seersucker Blazer, which is the same cloth in the same navy. Under the Zip-Up Cotton Shirt untucked. With the Suminagashi Tee, which is the version we would argue for in August.

Care

Never press these flat, because the pucker is the cloth and an iron removes it for good. The polyester at sixty-nine percent sets the heat ceiling, so keep an iron away from them entirely if you can and hang them to dry instead. Wash cool. Our care guidance covers the rest.
