Lemaire Balloon Pouch

Most evening bags solve the handle problem by hiding it: a fine chain, a thin strap, something that disappears so the body of the bag can be looked at. This one does the opposite and makes the handle the event. Calcite beads are strung into a short carrying loop above a soft rounded body in nappa lambskin, and because the beads are graded stone rather than metal they catch light in a dull, milky way instead of a bright one, which sits against the leather rather than competing with it. The body is deliberately underworked. It is a balloon shape with no hardware on show, no external pocket, and no stiffening, so it holds a soft curve and settles differently each time it is set down. Inside it is lined in silk, which is a decision nobody sees and everybody notices, because silk is what stops a small bag feeling like a container. The proportions are for a phone, a card case, and a key, and the house has resisted the temptation to make it hold more. That restraint is what keeps the shape. A pouch built to swallow a day’s contents cannot stay round.

Why we selected it

We wanted one evening piece that was not black satin and not a minaudière. The stone handle does the work a piece of jewellery would do, so the bag is the ornament and nothing else has to be.

Lemaire‘s accessories tend to take one soft form and refuse to over-engineer it, and this is that instinct applied to an evening bag rather than to a day bag.

Materials and construction

Nappa lambskin, lined in silk, with a handle of calcite beads. Made in Spain, in black. Nappa is a full-grain lambskin finished for softness rather than for structure, which is why the body drapes and creases instead of holding a taut wall. We do not hold a percentage composition for this piece or a count or diameter for the beads.

We do not hold measurements for this pouch. It is scaled for a phone, a small card case, and a key, and the bead handle is a short carrying loop for the hand rather than a shoulder strap, so it is worn in the hand or over the wrist.

Styling

It reads best against something unstructured, since a soft bag next to a sharp shoulder makes the bag look accidental. Black nappa with a pale stone handle will carry across a dark tailored jacket or a silk skirt without needing anything else added to the outfit.

Care

Two materials with two different needs, so treat them separately. The lambskin wants what any fine smooth leather wants, which our fabric care guide covers in its leather section: a soft dry cloth, no soaking, and a specialist rather than a home remedy for anything serious. The beads want more caution than the leather does. Calcite is a soft mineral, softer than glass and far softer than the stones usually strung into jewellery, so it scratches against keys and hardware and it is marked by acids, which in practice means perfume, hairspray, and citrus. Spray scent before picking the bag up rather than while holding it, and store the pouch so the handle is not resting under the body’s weight.
