Under-stitching is a line of stitching that normally exists to keep a facing or a seam allowance rolled to the inside where it cannot be seen. Doing it in white on a navy body inverts the whole premise: the stitch that was meant to disappear becomes the only graphic on the garment, and it maps the seams so you can read how the piece was put together just by looking at it. That is a small joke made with real technique. The rest of the hoodie is shape. Boxy through the body rather than fitted, with sleeves cut past the length of the arm so they gather at the wrist. Ninety-five percent cotton with five percent elastane, at a heavyweight. Made in the Netherlands.

Why we selected it

Almost every hoodie we are offered is differentiated by what is printed on it. This one is differentiated by its stitching, which means it will still be the same garment in ten years.

Mai-Gidah’s habit is to take an ordinary piece of construction and put it where it can be seen, and this hoodie is the plainest garment the house makes that still does it.

Materials and construction

Ninety-five percent cotton and five percent elastane, heavyweight. Zip through, boxy fit, oversized sleeves, and white contrast under-stitching. Color: Navy. Made in the Netherlands.

Fit notes

Boxy means it is cut straight through the body and does not taper, so it sits away from the waist and takes a layer underneath without changing shape. The sleeves are longer than the arm on purpose and are meant to bunch at the cuff. A zip-through with this much room in the body will hang open well, which is how a boxy hoodie is best worn.

Styling

Over the White Shirt with Autoportrait, with the collar out, so the white stitching and the white shirt agree. Under the Corduroy Worker Style Jacket. With the Jogger Trousers or the Drawstring Joggers.

Care

Wash cool and inside out, and keep it out of a hot dryer. The elastane is the limit rather than the cotton: heat degrades it, the degradation is permanent, and a cuff that has lost its elastane never comes back. Our care guidance covers the rest.
