Nicholas Daley Five Pocket Jean

The five-pocket jean is the most fixed garment in the modern wardrobe. Two front pockets, a coin pocket inside the right, two patch pockets at the back, and a layout that has not meaningfully changed in a century and a half. That fixity is exactly what makes it a useful place to put something unexpected, because the shape is so thoroughly known that the eye goes straight past it to the cloth.

Which is the point here. Daley put a pattern into the denim for autumn 2024 rather than putting a pattern onto a garment, and the result is a jean that is entirely orthodox in its construction and not at all orthodox in its fabric. It is the reverse of the usual move in this category, where the cloth stays plain and the garment gets distressed, embroidered, or cut about. Nothing has been done to this jean at all. Everything has been done to the denim it is made from.

Why we selected it

We took this because it is the only jean we have seen that puts its interest in the weave rather than in the wash. Every other pair on the market is an ordinary denim with something done to it afterwards, and we would rather sell the opposite.

Nicholas Daley works the pattern into the cloth rather than onto the surface across his whole line, and the five-pocket jean is that habit applied to the least experimental garment there is.

Materials and construction

Sixty-four percent cotton and thirty-six percent polyester. Made in England. Standard five-pocket layout, patterned denim. Colour: Navy.

Fit notes

We do not hold a leg shape for this jean and would rather say so than guess at one. What we can say is that a denim with this much polyester in it will hold its shape rather than stretching out at the knee and seat the way a pure cotton jean does, and that it will not shrink meaningfully. It will also not fade the way cotton denim fades, so this is not a jean bought for the way it will age. Come in and try it, or call us and we will measure the pair in the store.

Styling

Care

Wash cool and inside out, and hang to dry. The polyester content means heat is a genuine risk: a hot dryer will set creases into the blend permanently. Do not tumble dry. Our fabric care guidance covers the rest.
