Nicholas Daley Stepping Razor T-Shirt

“Stepping Razor” was written by Joe Higgs and recorded by Peter Tosh in 1977, and it is one of the most quietly menacing records reggae produced. Daley took it as the title of his spring 2021 collection, which was about the meeting of reggae and martial arts in the 1970s. Tosh, alongside everything else he was, held a black belt in karate. The collection’s film starred Jordan Thomas, Britain’s first Olympic karateka, and was scored by Dennis Bovell. That is a dense set of references for a t-shirt to carry, and this shirt carries them by carrying the collection’s name, set in typography drawn for it by the artist Gaurab Thakali.

Why we selected it

This is the way into the house, and it happens to be the piece that names the thing the house is actually about. We would rather sell someone this than nothing.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, made in Japan. Relaxed fit, screen-printed collection typography. Colour: Navy.

Fit notes

A relaxed tee cut, worn alone or under a shirt. Cotton jersey relaxes slightly through the body over the first several wearings and returns with washing. Take your usual size.

Styling and care

Under the Lee Shirt or the Military Overshirt, or on its own with the Pleated Trouser in black. Wash it cool and inside out and hang it to dry; heat is what cracks a screen print, so keep it out of a hot dryer. Our fabric care guidance covers the rest.
