Nicholas Daley Western Shirt

The western shirt is a garment of specific, functional details that have all outlived their functions. The snap closure was adopted so a shirt would tear open rather than hold if it caught on a saddle horn or a branch, which is a genuine safety consideration and no longer anyone’s. The piping outlines the yokes and pockets and exists to make the shirt legible at a distance, which mattered in the arena. The pointed yokes themselves are structural, distributing strain across the shoulder. Every one of them is now purely a signal, and the shirt is one of the most recognisable objects in American dress because of it.

Daley’s version keeps all of it and changes the register entirely, by putting it in a navy rayon and cotton mix with tonal piping. Rayon is a regenerated cellulose fibre, made from wood pulp, and it behaves unlike cotton: it is fluid, it drapes heavily, and it has a soft sheen. That is the fibre of the 1940s and 1950s shirt rather than of the working one, and it turns a functional garment into a liquid one. Tonal rather than contrast piping completes the move. The details are all present and none of them shouts.

Why we selected it

We are in the one town in America where a western shirt has to be right or not stocked at all. This one is right, because it is a designer’s reading of the form from outside it rather than a reproduction from inside it, and because the tonal piping means it can be worn by someone who does not want to make an announcement.

Nicholas Daley works through borrowed garment traditions rather than his own alone, and the western shirt is the furthest he travels from Britain and the Caribbean.

Materials and construction

A navy rayon and cotton mix. We do not hold the proportions. Made in Japan. Tonal piping, front chest pocket detailing, snap closures, mother of pearl buttons.

Fit notes

We do not hold a cut for this shirt. What we can say is that a rayon-rich cloth drapes heavily and hangs close to the body without clinging, so this will read fluid rather than structured, and it does not hold a crisp shape the way a cotton shirt does. Snap closures give slightly under strain by design. Come in and try it, or call us.

Styling

With the Pleated Trouser in black, tucked, which is how a western shirt wants to be worn. Under the Fonte Jacket. Keep everything else plain and keep it away from the tartans, which are the one thing it cannot survive.

Care

Rayon is the weak point: it loses considerable strength when wet and can shrink or distort if it is washed warm or wrung. Wash it cool and gently or have it cleaned, dry it flat away from heat, and press on low. Mother of pearl is a natural material and will crack under a hot iron, so press around the buttons.
