Nicholas Daley Zip Cardigan

Curved seams are the detail that matters here, and they are the one nobody mentions. A seam is usually a straight line because a straight line is cheap to draft, cheap to sew, and does the job. A curved seam has to be drafted deliberately, eased as it is sewn so two edges of different lengths meet without puckering, and it takes real skill to execute. What it buys is shape: a curve through the body of a cardigan follows a torso in a way a straight side seam cannot, so the garment holds a line without any structure inside it.

Around that, three materials are doing three jobs. The striped body in red and oatmeal supplies the colour. Waxed cotton at the contrast supplies the hard industrial note the house puts on almost everything. Needlecord, which is corduroy at a fine wale count and closer to velvet in hand than to a work cloth, supplies a third texture between the two. Four patch pockets keep it useful rather than decorative.

Why we selected it

We took this for the seaming, which is the most skilled making Daley puts into a garment and the least visible. Three contrasting materials on one cardigan could easily be a mess and this is not, which is the whole test.

Nicholas Daley routinely puts three materials on a garment that would conventionally carry one, and the Zip Cardigan is where that habit is at its most concentrated.

Materials and construction

Body one hundred percent linen. Made in England. Striped body, contrast waxed cotton and needlecord, curved seams, four patch pockets. Colours: red and oatmeal stripe.

We do not hold a confirmed composition for the lining, and on a cardigan carrying this much contrast, a lining, a facing, and a contrast panel are easy to confuse. Rather than print a fibre we cannot stand behind, we would sooner tell you plainly that we do not have it. Ask us and we will find out.

Fit notes

Cut as a layer, to go over a shirt or a tee rather than against the skin, with the curved seams giving it shape through the body without any internal structure. Linen softens with wear rather than wearing out, and it relaxes across a day, so a cardigan that sits close in the morning will feel easier by the evening. Take your usual size for wearing over a shirt.

Styling

Over a plain ecru or white shirt with the Pleated Trouser in black. The stripe is the event, so nothing else patterned and nothing near the tartans. Red and oatmeal is a summer palette despite the weight.

Care

Linen creases, which is the fibre behaving properly rather than the garment failing, and the usual remedy is limited here. The waxed contrast rules out machine washing and dry cleaning without warning, and the needlecord rules out a hot iron, which crushes fine pile permanently. Press the linen on the reverse while slightly damp, which is when linen presses best, and keep the iron off the wax and off the cord. Sponge the waxed sections with cold water, dry away from heat, and tell any cleaner about both. Our fabric care guidance covers the rest.
